  • donation site problem...

So I went to donate plasma today and since they classify my veins as a very difficult 3 (deep and hard to get to), I'm very particular on who sticks a huge needle into my arm.

Well today, my normal person is out since its her day off, and I settle for someone else...

He had a hard time FINDING the vein first, and then when he finally stuck it in, I said I thought it felt wrong....like he went into a new or different vein...he said I had good vein pressure and everything, and infact my donation went faster then normal....

but now I have this lovely mark on my upper arm, and while not overly painful (the needle site is always tender since I've been donating for years and have a lot of scar tissue built up), I didn't notice it till I went to take a shower tonight.

I'm going swimming tomorrow for father's day at my parents, and I know any of them will ask what it is...what exactly do I honestly tell them?

Damn, I didn't know the vampires grappled too.

Unless the folks are against donating I would just tell them the same thing you told us.
    Meeeeoooow.....

Yeah, just tell them what you told us.

I've never gotten a rash like that, but I have gotten some pretty fantastic bruising right around the needle mark that took 2 weeks to heal. (I clotted in the middle of the donation, they tried moving the needle around to get me bleeding again, the gal hit a nerve and I yelped and she yanked the needle out and said "Alright we're done". Fantastic bruise. Lots of different colors.) People asked, I explained, people understood. Some even had similar stories. No one ever made a big deal about it.

Only time I know of that someone had trouble explaining their marks was a classmate who regularly donated and also went snowboarding up in Whistler, and he said that when he crossed the border his car was searched every time. But of course Customs is paid to be suspicious. Your family should be understanding, especially if you're even a semi-regular donor.

Just tell 'em what happened. Most people will congratulate you on donating. Oh and on the rash.. I'd keep an eye on it and if it gets worse, go to the doc.
If I make no sense, I apologize. I'm constantly interrupted by an actual toddler.

I'd just tell the straight story - you went in for a blood donation, your regular tech wasn't there, and hence the result.

My doc was also very lousy at getting blood samples during my pregnancy (apparently I hadn't gotten rubella as a child so I had to be monitored during the first trimester) so I always went home with a bruise of some sort on my arm. But once the task was assigned to the nurses at the clinic - nothing.

Is it itchy, raised or sore?

Cause I don't think it's necessarily a rash per se. It's kind of hard to tell, since it's a little blurry, but I think it might be a type of bruise. it could be that you bled into the muscle, and it's almost...percolating out.

            I'm not a doctor, i don't play one on t.v. and I've never even gotten a lollypop!

its only tender if I poke it with my finger, and there is TINY bruise around the needle site.

Yeah, that's about what happened to me that one time. The OP's is much milder (presuming it is, in fact, a form of bruise and not a rash of some sort).

I had this happen in the hospital.. she literally went right through the vein and i unfortunately had to fly that weekend for a funeral.. I ended up in the San Francisco airport urgent care with a possible blood clot in my arm where you can see in that picture the skin was turning black

It looks like pettichae: a kind rash looking spotting of broken blood vessels under the skin. I'm not sure what caused it, but if it is it is probably harmless in your particular case. Might have been caused by the tourniquet; is that where the tourniquet was?

The "filled faster than usual" is a bit concerning. Did the blood seem overly bright red? I'm thinking he might have gotten an artery.

However, you seem like you're fine, but if it gets hot to touch or painful go see your doctor.
