Problematic Ads - Report 'em here

If any ads show up which you guys feel are inappropriate (visually/audibly/content) or otherwise disruptive, Please post the names here (grab a screenie if you can!) so we can nuke them. Just trying to get them all in one place!

Thanks!

Sound Money Defense League

Sorry, I'm just so sick of seeing Trump every single day on the TV and Internet, I just want one site free of it!

Zellie Crescent 05-18-2016 11:21 AM

I downloaded adblocker for my phone so they don't come up at all, to me it's just a lot easier that way.

I thought the reality show "Pick the biggest liar in the U.S." was going to be aired in November, so these ads would still be around in October.

Since you can't play favourites, would nuking ALL political ads be a valid work-around?

October, November... whichever :p

This is actually a fantastic idea, and I've already made the switch to block all politics ads. Until it was suggested, it didn't even occur to me to check to see if I could. Done.

wolfie 05-18-2016 06:11 PM

Will this also block ads for Disney? After all, Mickey Mouse is always a popular write-in candidate.:p

Also, how far does this go regarding blocking ads with the candidate's name? I understand that Trump owns a number of hotels and casinos that bear his name - would their ads be blocked? How about ads unrelated to a candidate but bearing their name? For example, Kentucky Fried Chicken (Colonel Sanders), or a railroad museum bragging about their new replica of the DeWitt Clinton (one of the first steam locomotives in the U.S.)?

XCashier 05-18-2016 07:41 PM

My apologies if I was out of line. I'm just so irritated with it all; I certainly didn't mean to cause trouble here. Blocking all political ads is just fine.

EricKei 05-19-2016 12:22 AM

Nah. This is exactly the sort of thing we mean by "problematic" ads (along with audio ads, flashing banners, et al). If they'll tick users off, let us know in here!

morgana 08-04-2016 05:27 PM

I'm getting redirected every now and again to AliExpress. I click on a link and what comes up isn't the next page in the thread, but something being sold on this AliExpress website. Back up and try again and I get what's supposed to be on the link, but it's getting annoying. Is it just me? And is there anything you can do?

EricKei 08-04-2016 11:17 PM

We're on the case.

In the meantime, just to be see if it IS on your side, please run your antivirus/antispyware/ADWCleaner programs. If those don't help, run MalwareBytes,it's said to be effective against an infection that specifically redirects to that site.

RealUnimportant 08-07-2016 08:20 AM

I keep getting a picture of a young lady's bum. Can't screenshot properly as I'm on work's iPad, but the link appears to be for a site called hitme or hitwe? It's very unclear, sorry. I've been using the adbox's Report as Inappropriate.

ETA: It's hitwe. Appeared 3 more times even after reporting! :/

EricKei 08-07-2016 09:04 PM

We'll take a look. Thanks!

wolfie 08-07-2016 10:44 PM

Because asses belong in the CoC, MiM, and SC stories, not in the ads.

Got another one; trying to offer me a Thai bride? I'm using work's iPad again... Even though I'm using Private browsing mode, could the habits of a cow-irker be influencing the ads?

EricKei 08-21-2016 11:31 PM

Private Browsing just prevents your browser history from that session from being stored; it MAY prevent cookies from being kept after the session is over. If he is NOT using Private, the cookies/history from sites he accesses could still influence what you're doing, unless I'm mistaken.

I'll run it by the boss.

This is my understanding of things, too.
I'd clear all cookies, and, depending upon the browser being used, look at their support docs to find out how to turn off advertisement tracking - those use a completely separate cookie system from whichever cookies get set by the sites you visit.

RealUnimportant 08-23-2016 12:43 PM

It's just the stock Safari install on iOS 9.3. I've got an iDevice of my own so I'll research what should be possible about cleaning it off (within the oversight limits set by our IT) and report back if I'm still seeing adverts along this theme.

I don't use my own device at work because work rules, which I have no problem with. Besides, using their device to read CS makes it look like I'm researching work-related stuff - which technically I am...

ETA: to avoid a double post, I'm adding this here:
I've blocked ad tracking, cleared all history and refreshed the tracking ID. So far, so good! Tech stuff, higher ed, chemists, and narry a buttock to be seen.

RealUnimportant 08-25-2016 01:35 PM

Sorry for the double-post but the HitWe ads are back. I've taken a screenshot and shall attempt to upload it somewhere.

ETA: here:
http://www.jh4c.com/cs/hitwe.jpg

I can't see if it's working, the company firewall is blocking it as porn!

Becks 08-29-2016 04:01 PM

Problematic for me in that while I don't actually get the ads very often, when I do, they slow down the site A LOT.

Like waiting minutes for pages to load.

RealUnimportant 08-29-2016 04:08 PM

I think the site's trying to get me hitched...
http://www.jh4c.com/cs/musdat.jpg
I've also been offered Chinese brides, but the screenshot glitched.

PrplPplEater 08-29-2016 09:42 PM

This should be getting cleared up shortly.
Sorry for the difficulty!

Teefies2 09-12-2016 07:30 AM

There was a Subway ad on the page (I think it was in Morons in Management or Cursing out Coworkers) that said "Get a free 6 inch sandwich with the purchase of a 30 ounce drink when you join". I texted "OFFERS" to 782929 as the ad said. What I got back was this: "Reply w/ur ZIPCODE as ur sig 2agree 2 SUBWAY offers (max10msgs/mo-Msgs may b autodialed-Consent not req'd 2buy goods/svcs) Reply HELP=help Msg&data rates apply"

Really? We're not even checking to see if the advertisers can type proper English??? I feel pretty confidant that Subway Corp. would not approve this type of ad. Smells of scam to me.

Deserted 10-01-2016 07:12 PM

I just had something redirect me from this thread to a "survey" site that is really just semi-targeted spamvertising.

The funny thing is, it was asking questions about my internet provider. Easily determined via my IP address, but still.

Sadly txtspk is used by companies a lot, as it allows for more content in a smaller (cheaper) message. its L bout da $s!

It just happened again, this time to a different URL for the same site... and when I came here to report it, it happened again! I realize this is a Google Ads problem, and I've reported the complete list of URLs that I could find to them.

There's an add for a public records search. Every time it comes up it causes my phone to zoom in and go strait to the fill in box on the ad.

This has taken a bit of a turn.

I use a slightly-older version of the Opera browser for my internettin' (mostly). It has a "feature" where URLs can be blacklisted by Opera (the company) for various reasons, typically malware.

Guess what site appeared on my blacklist today for "fraud" and "distributing malware"? :/

I hope you're gonna say MFS, but somehow I doubt it.

Here is the thread I was sharing: http://www.customerssuck.com/board/s...d.php?t=116331

Not sure if this is a specific ad or ad server BUT

Malwarebytes kept alerting me about this site and IP address while (and only while ) I was here on CS.

a(.)rfihub(.)com Please note the ()'s are not part of the URL I put those there so I could post the URL the IP address is 198 8 70 212 This site and IP are classified as adware/malware

Not sure if this is from your ad server or something came in from another site before I came here.

The pop-up is disturbing if it was triggered by an ad served from here. All ads on here are served via Google from their servers; this site simply streams the data from them when the page loads. Google generally does a really solid job of ensuring that ads served on their networks are clean and safe, but unfortunately people that create these things are also always trying to find ways around the barriers to them being pests.

The content of the pop-up is almost certainly 100% bogus - it's just click-bait to try to get the person viewing it to panic and click through on the ad, which then likely tries to get them to buy something or install something. Shady tactics at best, and as I come across things like them I try to block them.

I've searched the history of everything served from here and did not find anything from a.rfihub.com, but there was a single ad unit from p.rfihub.com; I've blocked it.

Hopefully that will be the end of them.

Getting constant opiate recovery and subxone advertisements

wolfie 02-22-2017 12:28 AM

Advertising manager probably just misunderstood our gripes about co-workers, managers, and customers. After all, dealing with dopes at work COULD be interpreted as "having a dope problem".

raw1989 02-28-2017 04:24 AM

Just letting you know where an add I cant tell u what it is and im on a work computer so a ss is not possible its white and like teal with a letter in a circle I think that is cut off so u can not see the full add not sure if its on my end or your end.

EricKei 02-28-2017 05:05 AM

If you can get a screenshot and PM that to PPE, that would help a lot (CTRL-PrtScr, then open Paint.exe and hit Paste/CTRL-V and save the result as an image file). Thanks!

Empty (Promises?) Ads

Like raw 1989, I've seen these. Also on my Ubuntu/Firefox rig a black background with a red arrow upper right and a rotating red ring of death centered.

Crossbow 03-30-2017 04:47 PM

If anyone gets an autoplay video ad that keeps grabbing focus away from the cursor, say something here. PPE and I have been trying to track it down, but it doesn't load for either of us so he can't find out who it is.

There's a red triangular logo in the upper right of the ad, but we've had no luck figuring out what company it is.

Monterey Jack 04-01-2017 02:20 AM

I'm getting that autoplay video...it makes it almost impossible to post here anymore.

EricKei 04-01-2017 04:27 AM

MJ (and others) -- If it comes back again:

- Do you have any way of screen-recording a brief video of it?

- If you hover over it (DON'T CLICK! ;) ), does the target URL appear at the bottom of the browser or anything? If so, can you please type it up & screenshot it?

Monterey Jack 04-02-2017 03:06 AM

Looks like the spinning fortune cookie ad is gone now. :)

Monterey Jack 04-02-2017 01:14 PM

Now it's back. I can only post if I'm lucky enough to not have that ad playing when I click on a new subforum.

EricKei 04-02-2017 06:23 PM

Ugh. Were you able to capture any video/a screenshot or any other info to help tack it down? ^_^;>

PS, In the meantime, please allow me to make a suggestion -- for everybody. :) Snag the free version of SpyBot: Search & Destroy, run the updates, and then run "Immunization." It sets up blacklists in certain browsers (IE/Edge and FF, unsure which others) and in your Windows HOSTS file which cause ads & popups from known malicious sites to simply redirect to "localhost" as their source...so, even if your browsers doesn't have its popup blocker turned on, the worst you'll get from a blacklisted site is a completely empty popup window. This would explain why I've never seen any such problematic ads, myself ;) The spyware scanner itself is quite helpful, as well.

SpyBot itself is true freeware, no ads, no limited uses/expiration, no hidden "helper" programs (from what I've seen), etc., just make sure to DL it via Safer Networking, their publisher (link below). Worst it'll do is show a plain box attached to the main window offering an upgrade.

Worth a shot!

I have tracked down the majority of the ads causing the problem. It was actually a combination of advertisers, and even YouTube channels. My guess is that somebody out there is using a really broken video template all over the place and they have no idea that it isn't working.

Anywho - the offending advertisers and a fair number of individual ads have been blocked. For the most part, the effects should be immediate, but for some, it may take a little while before they are all blocked completely.

Hopefully this is the last of this, for a while :)
