Thank you for your vigilance, Mrs. Holmes

A woman says to me, "I don't know if you know this or not but there's a pen and a pad on the shelf. It might be yours."

She said this in the same tone that you would use to inform someone of a used drug needle. So I go to investigate but she dutifully brings me the pen and note pad.

The detail she left out? Where she found the pad, her kids, whom she had been yelling at a moment before to settle down, knocked over a box of pool noodles.

Not a huge deal but it's hilarious to me that she failed to mention that fact. Considering the shift in priorities, you would think I had found the outline to the next Harry Potter, but alas it was only a grocery list. And not even a grocery of items that would suggest a science teacher was getting involved with a special summer project to pay off his medical bills.

On the plus side, I got a free pen.

Was the note pad a total loss?

I tossed it. I wasn't thinking about it at the time.
