I love Cracked.com

They've made me laugh many times, but I've never seen one that outlines how I feel sometimes until today.

It's a list of 8 small things including a stranger's hug, a puppy's lick, or a song on the radio that has prevented people from ending their own lives.

XCashier 08-25-2011 02:55 AM

It's a wonderful article. The link should be posted all over the net. There are so many people who could benefit from reading it.

LillFilly 08-25-2011 06:10 AM

Good stories. But I am reminded of people who use the threat of suicide to get what they want, or do it to get attention/act-out/etc. The people who aren't serious about it, but see it as a way to mess with other people. Grrrr.

PepperElf 08-25-2011 03:59 PM

the part about the roommate and the firing pin = hmm there seems to be some dust in my eye.

Unfortunately that is how I have appeared in the past when I have been suicidal-that is, I've acted out, or used it for attention. I haven't intentionally done it with those aims however, I have seriously wanted to die before. I now have something to live for.

Amazing article though. :)

ETA: The guy at No. 2 has appeared in magazines before around Australia. Every so often, they'll do a story on Lifeline or similar and he was featured in one of them.

teh_blumchenkinder 09-25-2011 04:12 AM

... no wonder captchas are obscure, difficult to read, and generally a pain in my ass. >_> neat crowd-sourcing, I say!

notlovinit 11-10-2011 01:18 AM

Okay, the captchas is pretty cool, but one thing doesn't make sense to me.. If you are translating words for the computer - how does the computer know when you put the wrong thing?

Rapscallion 11-13-2011 09:20 AM

I suspect it compiles results from many people and chooses the most common returned result.

Well #23 didn't surprise me much. I've seen their photos before and I remember Julie Kavner back from when she played Brenda Morgenstern on "Rhoda".
21 - I remember thinking that after Gary died. Poor Willis!

and … Mr. Rodgers . :) Yeah that brings back memories. Just listening to his voice feels like a soothing balm. :)

I went looking for episodes since I have a little one on the way. And even though...Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood?...is supposed to be in the same style, there is something amazingly different between watching Mr. Rogers, a live person, tell and show you basic lessons vs. computer graphics.

Vintage ads for modern products....probably NSFW

Do you ever wish that the advertising genius of yesteryear could be used with today's modern products?Well, good sire, sit down in your comfortable chair in front of the fire, get the good woman to bring the slippers and your dinner and prepare to be delighted.
We advise you do not let her see it-it will just make her hysterical, and you don't want that after a hard day's work.

Just for you, good sire,is the link. It's probably not safe to open in the presence of those lightweights who you work with. However, you have a strong character and can gaze upon such sights with impunity

Is Cracked trying to say something about a prominent person at CS? I realize most of us have our minds in the gutter, but as the article says:

Quote:

Back then harlots were "knaves," "rapscallions," "roustabouts," and other awesome words that you should all start using so it's not just me anymore
By "back then", Cracked is referring to Chaucer's time.
