  • So, I'm gonna be fired. :(

I don't know if this is the right place for this, if it's not I'm sorry.

This happened right after I came back from my break, I walk up to my department and I see these 3 kids coming around the corner from produce, 2 of them are in shopping carts back to back (or more appropriately front to front) and the third one is hanging off the back of the second one. I see this and they know that they're caught, by the time I stoped walking and they stopped rolling along I'm about 6-7 feet away from them. (that's important for later)

I tell them 4 times to "get out of the carts or I'll call security and a manager." The kids tell me no to mind my own business after I tell my coworker Cas who saw the whole thing to call the manager Charlie they started making jokes about Willie Wonka, I see Jerry from produce walk into the prep room of his department and tell him to call Charlie but he doesn't hear me. I go into the produce prep room and use the PA system to call "Charlie come to seafood immediately" I go back out and the kids are finally getting out of the carts and I tell them to "please leave" and what I get in return is screw you, shut up and you're not the boss of me.

Let me say again the shortest distance between me and these kids was about 6-7 feet. Charlie comes over and I tell him everything that just happened so he tells me to come with him to point the kids out, we get right in front of the customer service counter and this woman stops us and yells "excuse me!" we both stop and I think we're out of something or something she wants isn't on sale but here's where my life turns to hell. "Are the one who was harassing my son!? Who the hell do you think you are to yell at my son like that?!" Now up to this point in my life I've only heard about and read about parents like her, now I have the misery of saying that now I know what it feels like. Shocked and wanting to defend myself I opened my mouth " the way they were in the carts wasn't safe, they could've hurt themselves or someone else" this only enraged her "well who the fuck are you mother Theresa?! What gives you the right to scream and curse at my son, to go up to him and get in his face and threaten him?! I'm going to do everything I can to make sure you get fired! And if you EVER go near or yell at my son again I'll call the police!" once again I tried to defend myself and I thought a couple of times that she was going to hit me from the little movements she was making, Charlie tried to shush me 3 times but I felt like I needed to speak my side of it.

Charlie then told me to "go into the back right now and wait till get there." I went and hid in the produce cooler behind some stuff so if anyone went back there you wouldn't know where I was unless you knew where to look (the morning people sometimes use the space if they want to be lazy and take a 30minute break) I told Cas and Jerry unless it's Charlie you don't know where I am, about 20 minutes later Charlie comes in and asks me for my side once again this time with a smile on his face, and I feel like I'm 8 seconds from either throwing up or messing up my pants, this is not good. (99% of the time it's not a good thing when he smiles) He says she has a full recording with sound of their entire cart ride beginning (her telling them to go ahead) to end (me calling Charlie) and that she's a fucking bitch and full of shit. He tells me that the security cameras show her recording them with her iPhone laughing and smiling but with no sound, he escorted me up to the office to see it and then he told me to calm down and said that he was going to defend me.

She called 2 times in the 20 minutes I was up there, the first time she called I could hear her screaming on the other side of the phone (our phones are LOUD plus I was standing right next to Charlie) about how upset her son was and how she wants me fired and that I deserve to get fired and she was going to make sure I got fired, Charlie told her that I already got disciplined but that wasn't good enough for her she wanted proof that I was fired. Then she decided that Charlie was talking down to her and not respecting her as a customer or person and not taking the situation seriously and that I was an insubordinate little bitch. Then she demanded the corporate number. The second time she called it was more yelling and screaming about how Charlie was completely unprofessional and how no matter what she would "get justice for her and her son and his friends extreme emotional distress and embaresment".

Before I left I thanked Charlie for trying to defend me but I know exactly how corporate is and that this woman is out for blood and wants "justice." (me fired) So knowing those 2 things since they don't have the extra help without me for the next 2 days I'm pretty sure they're going to tell me not to come back after Christmas, or once the store manager Gesner and corporate hear about it I'll be fired tomorrow morning. The other thing about this is if I just looked away and ignored it and they or someone else got hurt they would've looked at the tapes blamed me for ignoring that and not helping to prevent it and I would be fired anyway. After 8 and a half years this is how I'm leaving my store.

Do you have legal aid available whre you are, lawyers that will give a free consultation? Perhaps they can go thru legal red tape to demand a copy of the video. With that showing her laughing at them, and showing you were never close to them, you could either take action against corporate for unfair dismissal, or take it to the media - they like to go after large corporations.

You shouldn't have to go thru this. It's a damn shame that so often in retail and other "lower on the totem pole" jobs, employees are put in a "damned if you do, damned if you don''t" situation like this.

    Madness takes it's toll....

I know you know your corporation and management better than I do, but I've got dollars to doughnuts you DON'T get fired. You've been there 8 1/2 years. There are security tapes in your favor. Charlie says she's full of it. This is not a fun situation, but it will be ok.

Assuming you're home now, have a big cocktail (or whatever you do to relax) and try to unwind. Get up early tomorrow and write down all the details you can about the entire incident. Try to get to work a little early tomorrow and be preemptive; approach management, tell them your concern in a straightforward, calm as possible manner.

      Please keep us updated!

Try to stay as calm as possible. Write down as many details about the incident as you can, for future reference. Make a note of the day and time, so you know which tape to ask for if you need evidence.

If you are disciplined, I'd look into hiring a lawyer (or at least consulting one). What you did was not threatening - it was done to protect that woman's idiot kid and his friends. The only threat you made was to get security, which isn't a harmful threat.

Good. The more she freaks the fuck out at everyone at every level of your company, the less anyone will take her seriously. If she treats anyone else half as well as she treated you and your coworker, this isn't going anywhere.

Since I am not sure where you work, if you are a union member, they can help you too if they try to fire you and you have the tapes to back you up.

I say that if she gets you fired, you should sue her for the lost income. She has video and the store has video.

I hope the union doesn't screw me over, and about the suing thing me or my family don't have enough money for a lawyer right now.

A good lawyer will look at your case and do it simply for the money that they win for you. At least a lot of them will. No money upfront most usually. Check into it, that's most likely what will happen. Especially if they have tapes.

Too bad the police wasn't called. Then there would be the cop's statement of what happened to back you up. Though maybe it's so bullshit (what that woman did) that he doesn't write up anything but he would have dressed her down so hard she would have thought twice about calling corp.

Don't teach me a lesson; all I learn is that you are an asshole.

Do you have any sort of Legal Aid or something similar? I was trying to get some legal advice just before I left my last area of residence and the local Law Society keeps a list of lawyers who will work pro bono or very nearly. You might want to check into that.

Other than that, I can't add to the excellent suggestions offered by others here. If you'd done nothing and her pwecious widdle cupcake had been injured, she'd have been equally out for blood because you didn't stop Junior from doing something stupid -- and you didn't stop her from allowing it.

Hang in there and I hope you get a good sleep, and that things go your way tomorrow.

If corporate actually has the indecency to fire you for this pile of steaming bullshit, they deserve to be bodily thrown into the streets and run over by steam rollers.

And this woman needs to shut her fucking piehole and learn how to start acting like a parent, and not her son's fun buddy and videographer.

What a load of fucking crap.

Seriously, you have your manager backing you, you have video, and you have eyewitnesses. What the flying fuck is WRONG with this woman that she thinks she can get you fired for looking out for the safety of the children AND the liability of the store you work for? For that matter, what the fuck is with your EMPLOYER that you are so certain that they will take her side in this ridiculous situation?

People are being killed in schools and theaters, sexually abused by people they trusted, killed by their parents, abducted by lunatics, and struggling just to survive in this current economy, and this fucking bitch thinks it's perfectly fine, even justifiable, to attempt to get someone fired for doing what she should have been doing in the first place?

FUCK HER! People like this make me fucking sick. I hope she gets a flaming case of genital warts. Not figuratively speaking; literally. I honestly hope her crotch bursts painfully into flames.

I'm just curious. Does your company always fire people for stupid reasons?

Does the union just sit by and let it happen?

Does your company let its personnel matters be determined by the people who are the most insane?

Because I just can't see how this should get you fired. It would be much more profitable for the company to put crazy lady off, than to replace eight years of experience because she complained.

If employees got fired simply by having a customer complain about them, I'd have been gone a long time ago. Like within my first 90 days. I've been with my employer for 14 years now. Yay?

                              If it happens:

Report her to the police for harassment. Tell them that she stated she would not stop until you were fired - maybe she won't want to stop then, either.

Protest the firing with legal assistance.

                              Maybe sue her, too.
