Line managers' can make or break
Recently my line manager (L) gave me time off, at short notice, to meet my 19 year old son at the Airport when he came back from missionary work in Bangladesh. It was very nice of her so I gave her a box of chocolates. "L" told me it wasn't necessary and then (and this is the good part) proceeded to tell me that I was a wonderful worker and she was happy to do me a favour as I work so well and I'm always cheerful. Wow. It was worth buying the chocolates to hear praise like that after 25 years of working for the same company. I was transfered two years ago to L's department and have never regretted the move.
