Got it bad tonight. Every other person that came in the store tonight had CHANGE. For beer and cigs and blunts. One woman tried to give me $7.75 in quarters, I called her on it because I saw she had plenty of bills to pay for her two packs of smokes. She said she didn't want to break into the bills and thought I could use the change. Well, she thought wrong. I didn't take the quarters. Same for the guy that did the SAME thing, he just wanted to dump his change. Then there were the ones that had nothing but change and I took money out of my pocket to avoid taking it. Yes, I do that. I bring plenty of ones just for it. They are amazed that I will spend my own money instead of taking $3 in loose change. I'm not rich, this job is just extra money for my gadget habit. I figure a few bucks here and there to make my job easier is worth it. And most of them pay me back. If it were only a few people with only a little each, it wouldn't be so bad. I can use that. But when the ENTIRE neighborhood does it constantly all night long, it's just too much. I can understand it if you need food(but if you went to a GROCERY store instead of a conv. store in the first place, maybe you wouldn't need to spend change). Hell, I'll contribute a little extra so you can get more. But it's never for food. Always beer and cigs. Always the same people. Always the same comments....heehee, hope you need some change.....I've got mad change....I bet you could use some change. No to all of the above. Sorry this is so long, but it really burns me up to see it week after week. Take a free money management class.

Stickycoins, can you re-post this next time we have a thread about the people who insist on trying to spend fifties and hundreds?

Personally, i was always happy to get the "change people" (except for the smelly tramp turning his overcoat inside out to get the last stinky 2p piece to pay for his can of Special Brew). Much better to have too much loose change than have a line of numpties all of whom buy one sandwich and pay with a £20 note, thus emptying the till of change.

That's a whole 'nother story.....other end of the spectrum. If it's not change, it's a $20/50/100 for a 69c soda or a 30c pack of gum. Had one tonight. 40c worth of candy, $20. Took it out of my pocket. I work alone and can't go get more $5/10s. They don't understand this. It's all about them. You see, they need change because they don't trust the weed/crack man with a $20/50/100 so they come to me to try and get change. I know who they are and what they are up to.

The only time change comes in handy is on a Friday(payday), or the 1st(welfare day) they NEVER use change then. Any other day they dig for 94c just so they don't have to 'break' a dollar. Some will even dig out pennies so they don't 'break' a quarter.......JEEEZZZZ....

No, they have to come in 5 minutes after someone comes back from the bank run. :sigh:

i don't mind taking change, as long as it's not solely/mostly pennies and it's for a large order; it tends to happen when i am low in change, large bills are another matter-i don't take them, unless it's a large purchase. if they can't bring reasonable amounts, i can't clear out my change bank for them-i can't operate without it, and i won't 'go broke' just so some asshat who was too stupid/lazy/thoughtless to ask the check cashing place for smaller bills to get his change here.

one customer actually went somewhere else, got his change and returned; i had his drink waiting for him!

Okay--I will 'fess up and admit that today I was Change Lady. I had to do laundry this morning and ended up having to change an entire $20 bill into quarters. There was over $15 left when I was done. And no one would take the quarters in trade for bills--I didn't get upset because I know it's a pain to take change when you've got plenty, but it made life tough for me! *lol* So I ended up going to the sandwich shop just a couple of doors down from us. I was upfront with the clerk when I went in, I asked if I could pay for two roast beef hoagies with quarters and she was okay with that, otherwise I would have reluctantly gone to the gas station across the street to buy dinner. They'll even take jars of oxidized pennies over there, though the clerks at Dunkin Donuts really hate it when the change people come in and haggle over the price of a chocolate-filled bavarian and then pay with pennies. (And no, I'm not speaking from personal experience! )
