  • The Battle Hymn of Irene

The things I come up with when it's 2 AM...

To the tune of "Battle Hymn of the Republic".

Mine eyes have seen the horror of the hurricaaane hordes
They have snapped up all the batteries, we're out of power cords
I am sure that we will see these back when power is restored
    Orange aprons soldier on!

    Glory glory hallelujah
    Glory glory hallelujah
    Glory glory hallelujah
    Orange aprons soldier on!

The generator truck came in at four o'clock this morn
Sorry, sir, they're gone, we will not get more 'fore the storm
We're out of flashlights, tarps and rope, our patience now is worn
    Orange aprons soldier on!

We're low on plywood now and we have sold out of duct tape
Irene's on her way now, there will be no great escape
Get your gutters ready, hope your house is in good shape!
    Orange aprons soldier on!

So, it seems the storm is over, and the damage's rather low
Still, just enough is down for it to be a mighty blow.
They all charge to refunds; then to sump pumps they all go
    Orange aprons soldier on!

The original last line was "Have you heard of Katia? There could be two storms in a row" but I had to change it because we'll at most get clipped by it if the forecasts are accurate.
It's little things that make the difference between 'enjoyable', 'tolerable', and 'gimme a spoon, I'm digging an escape tunnel'.

(sorry in advance if this is off-topic to your awesome song)

So... Everyone returned all their generators and bought sump pumps? I guess that is allowed if they didn't put gas in it?

Pretty much. Though, one or two towns were without power for a week, so for the first couple days after we sold every generator within 10 minutes of it being returned. We're still getting 1-2 people per day wanting generators even though power's been restored just about everywhere.

I expect that a few of those are the people who didn't manage to get one originally but think it might be useful to have one before the next time they're in need.

I would think that it would be a good idea to have a generator around. You never know when happens.
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.
