  • You gets what you pay for....

Welcome back faithful viewers, Its time for another episode of "Pissing Your Tech Off!"

BG: I am back in the world of the working and am busy with side business as well.

Welp, side business is good, have been selling 2-3 pcs a week. Older pcs that either have Linux Mint or Windows on them, normally for under $100. I tell people I will warranty them for 30 days against hardware, but there is no warranty on software.

A lot of my customers are older folks and I do realize this entails a lot of hand holding which I can do.

Earlier this week I get a call because a gentlemen has had Snap.do take over his browser. he asks me to take a look at it and I give him my standard song and dance about software is not covered, fine fine he says(remember this).

I get it on my bench and discover he is has 6 virus found by AVG rescue disk and 20 hits with Malwarebytes. gotta love it. look at his browsing history....pr0n and lots of it!

I get the machine cleaned up and make sure it has my standard low cost anti-everything. Microsoft Security Essentials, MalwareBytes and Adaware running in compatibility mode to back up MSE. It works, Its what the customer was willing to spend.

I deliver it back, everything is working correctly, I explain what I did and why and did it in as simple terms as possible so there was no confusion. First thing he says is Did you delete my stuff folder, No I don't anything if its not infected by virus'.

Get ready for the knockout punch!

Great! Thats all the home porn that me and my girlfriends have made........

    O...M...G!

As I finished up, so I could make my escape, he asked what did he owe me. Truthfully, I just wanted out at that point. I mumbled something about $40, and he starts bitching about that being too much, I dont know what the expression on my face suddenly was, but his mouth hung open for a second and then it was Let me get you the money...nothing more was said, he thanked me and I got out of there...

The topping on the cake was, that he left me a voice mail while I was on the way home, I drove home screaming so I didnt walk in the house and freak out(gods only know what the other drivers thought as I was driving down the highway with windows down screaming at the top of my lungs). He was going on about next time I was over, I should plan to stay a while and have a beer with him and watch a movie....

So this guy was going to porn sites on his computer That's just....
My best friend is famous for visiting porn sites (he's not a pervert btw but visits these sites on occasion) His dad's computer was running just fine until he started going to porn sites. His dad fixed the computer and cleaned it up good. Guess what? He went back to the porn sites again, and the computer got infected again. No surprise, he was told that he could no longer use it Then he goes and buys his own laptop.... Yup, he went back to the porn sites again and voila! It starts running slow, he takes it to Best Buy to have them fix it, and they tell him the porn sites are what is most likely causing it Oh but that's not the end.... Shortly after this, I came over to his house and he was on his laptop, looking at (I'll let you figure this one out ) Sounds like he's the one who needs

Yeah, I may well have had a go at a member of this household lately after *adult* targeted adverts appeared on all three peoples laptops on sites that are known for tracking your other usage of your PC and acting accordingly regarding which adverts you get shown. I know it wasn't me or the other person (and I can confirm that the third person *has* been looking at certain stuff but doesn't know that we know that) but because we use the same IP we seem to have all got the adverts! Went zooming over the persons head though!

When I do something like this, I first back up the infected drive with Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image. I clean it out, make it work the way it's supposed to and then tell them what I did and what it will cost. If they won't pay, no prob, the old infected image goes on and here ya go.

Sounds like your customer caught a bunch of Internet STDs. This is why you use protection.

I'd rather have a set price, something like "Virus/malware removal, $X up front"
