  • question for microsoft tech support employees

have you gotten any calls from people who wanted to know where the start menu was?
ive been wondering for a long time

I think I've seen some calls reported from tech support that wasn't specifically Microsoft, but generally instead from ISP support. The calls usually went along the lines of "No, the 'start' menu, from the 'start' button. It's on the bottom left. No, your other left..."

i was once tempted to say throw your mouse to the bottom left of the screen, but i was afraid they would take it seriously

I know this one girl, incredibly bright, seriously considering Ivy League.

I told her once to bring up the Start menu and she asked "Where's that?"

          Takes all sorts, I guess.

I used to work corporate tech support for reasearch division of one of the largest pharmaceutical companies. So I'd often be on the phone with research doctors. People that went to big ivy league schools, had doctorates, many of whom where being paid huge sums of money by the company. They'd have trouble turning a computer on. It's amazing how someone so intelligent could utterly fail when it comese to simple computer stuff.

One of the most brilliant men I've ever met can't drive. He's never bothered to learn, its not relevant to his life. To me, driving a car is simple, to Professor X, its an arcane mystery. He can, however, translate Latin, Ancient Greek and Sumerian at sight, and often expresses surprise that other people can't at least manage Latin translations. Its just what you know, and what interests you....

Hey, getting "where is that" is better than those calls I've taken with "I don't have one of those."

Bet if he accidently cut himself deep enough he would develop an interest in driving himself to the friggin hospital!

Just because you have a degree, doesn't mean that you are necessarily smart. My ex-wife had the common sense of nickel. Went bankrupt after we divorced and yet got a Masters degree. Hearing things like that have never surprised me.

And on the same token some of the smartest people I have met never went to college.

I hear "Calling 9-1-1" is quite popular these days, too.

Sadly, my mother is one of those people. Upon being told to click the green start button, she looked at her KEYBOARD, and said "I don't have any of that crazy Mac stuff on this computer!"... no mom, on the screen. "there's no green button on my monitor" Not the monitor, mom, the SCREEN, you know, the PICTURE on the monitor? "no, I'm pretty sure we don't have any Mac crap on here".... *headdesk*

Married, of course, to my father, he of "My computer doesn't need more RAM! There's more RAM in there than you could ever DREAM of having!" My dad's computer? 30 gigs. *sigh* Okay Dad, that beats my 200 gigs hands down

Last weekend when I was over, I borrowed my mom's computer to show my cousin and his wife some pictures on my webshots album. My mother said "Now don't mess up my computer like you did last time!"... err... huh? Last time, I simply checked my yahoo e-mail... how did I mess your computer up? She goes "you downloaded all those dirty pictures! They were right on the desktop! They had your NAME on them"... Mom, I'm 31 years old, I have my OWN computer at home thanks, and I'm a girl. A STRAIGHT girl. Do you really think I downloaded porn onto your desktop and would PUT MY NAME ON IT???? I told my brother to stop saving his porn to the desktop, problem solved :P (but try convincing my mom that my angelic brother would EVER download something like that!)

Now the bigger question is why he's putting your name on his porn.

My dad was doing something kinda like that. They kept getting a virus on their computer that, while totally benign as MS had fixed the exploit, kept appearing. I kept telling my mom that it has to be from someone looking at stuff "they shouldn't be looking at." She didn't believe me since only she and my dad are in the house now and my dad would never look at porn *rolls eyes*. I eventually checked the cache for IE and found a bunch of cahced images from a bunch of porn sites. So at dinner I mentioned that I found a lot of stuff that "shouldn't be there" and "somebody" had obviously been looking at a " bad" site. I said it might have been my uncle who was living with my parents for a few months (even though the dates on the files were well after he moved out), and that they wouldn't get the virus if that site was never visited. Lo-and behold suddenly, after the 5th time of clearing the virus, it never came back.

He also almost got me in a bunch of trouble years ago. After getting in trouble for having porn on the computer when I was like 14, I learned really quickly how to cover my tracks. So I would never let something so stupid as an uncleared history go passed me. My mom finds in the browsing history a bunch of porn sites and blames me. Clearly to me they aren't mine as it wasn't sites I ever went to. I knew it was from my dad, but she didn't believe me. "Mom, what other male is in the house??" My dad heard the yelling and came up with some total bullshit about cookies and managed to convince her that we didn't do anything.
