It's not always possible to copy files off a computer before sending it in.
Right, but backups are something you're supposed to do while things are working, not just as things are going bad.

where i worked it... depended... mostly on who you were and who you knew.

on my second ship i worked in ADP and we did the snooping. didn't snoop ourselves, but i think divo did.

One of the guys in the shop though... he was livid cos he thought one of the co-workers snooped his personal files. but no... the video they found was on the local computer's hard drive.

or rather he was livid because the guys made fun of him for it.
word of advice: don't make a "solo" video of yourself and save it on a local computer at work.
especially if the "area of action" is very very small.

Right, but even if you're conscientious about backups things can go wrong. For instance, by unhappy coincidence, mine seems to have quit tonight. I use Time Machine, which would update the backup every hour... except that, since leaving the external drive connected all the time would defeat the purpose of having an otherwise-portable computer. I plug it in and let it run at the end of the day, which means that, had I done anything more than web-surfing and email today, it could be lost. And if that's because the drive is bad then, well, these things happen, but if it's because someone intentionally went through my files and deleted anything they didn't happen to like...
Now the trouble about trying to make yourself stupider than you really are is that you very often succeed.

You're better than I am about that. I backed up my MBP two days ago, the first time I've let Time Machine do that since right before I upgraded to Snow Leopard.

My desktop on the other hand, has a scheduled backup that runs weekly, backing up my documents, and the system drive. Everything else gets updated as needed (based on changes).

On another note, I find it amazing that I'm the ONLY person in our IT department who actually backs up his documents from his desktop. I just use the windows supplied backup tool, and save it all to my P drive.

When they replaced our computers earlier this year, I was back up and running in a half an hour (most of that time was reconfiguring my desktop, putting my icons just so ...) while it took my counterpart hours to do so.

Here's a little for the OP. Kinda surprised at how unabashed that person was to give you their computer with Pr0n still playing on it. Most people I've encountered would deny watching Pr0n even after I find that they had a crap ton of viruses on their computer.

Before moving into Libraries I was an IT deskside bod. I once scheduled a reinstall for a woman who needed a whole new harddrive image since her PC was so badly messed up. Protocol on this required us to insist that they back up anything on their HDD that they wanted to keep onto a network drive and if they really wanted to, although we suggested nothing be put on c:\ drives, they could copy it back after the re-imaging. This lady was at her desk when I arrived, but told me she'd "not had time" to backup, despite being warned the previous week that I'd be there Friday lunchtime. As I'm mostly a nice guy, I agreed to backup her "My Documents" folder to my network space and let her have it back on the Monday. Since this was a music company ( a really big one) she had probably 100 MB of videos. Of course that weekend my network space was audited and this (soft) porn was found. I received a written warning, and worse, she got her porn back and never even thanked me for going the extra mile for her. On the upside I was allowed to view the material for which I'd been sanctioned and it was more funny than sexy and cheered me up a little.

Now, that's just wrong. I have yet to encounter porn on a fac/staff computer (the OP was a student). But, let me tell you, if I got in trouble like that, I would be spitting fire!! Were you able to dispute the warning?

                  Management backup (lack of)

Darn right I disputed it, but a new boss who didn't know me had just taken over and I think he wanted to flex his managerial muscle, so although I explained what had happened and pointed out that I had actually found and brought to the network security people's attention some worse porn on a manager's PC, he said that i'd broken protocol (which I had by being nice). What I should have done was just wiped her hard drive and lost her all her locally saved documents. It was a very big contract and the new manager wanted to show the customer that he took their policies seriously. I left a month or two later telling my colleagues I thought the contract would only last another 6 months due to this new manager, he outlasted me, the customer ended the contract 7 months later. Oh well. Good luck Billy Gill, wherever you are now.

A coworker of mine reported he found porn in the history file of one of the computers at work, resulting in increased internet security.

Of course by porn he meant a wrestling website that showed pictures of female wrestlers (Who might dress skimpy but come on)

Oddly enough the internet security doesn't block Seanbaby.com which has pictures of naked women on it.
