Husband has a D deficiency, as a result of a whacked-out thyroid (thank GODS not his pituitary, that would have been horrid). He's on one 50,000/two weeks, and the doc specifically put him on the D2 for reasons that I don't quite understand, but it was based on his bloodwork and the synthroid.

It's the lack of follow-up that worries me. Every time they change his meds, they send him in for another round of bloodwork, even if it doesn't come with an appointment. Just to check and make sure everything is kosher. Then there's a follow-up. Then another adjustment. It's all fine-tuning, but finally seems to be working.

100,000 IU a week? How bad is your Vitamin D deficiency?
I have no idea; they didn't tell me my levels.
Thank you for calling Card Services, how may I take your abuse today? ~Headset Hellion

I had hypercalcemia thanks to a frisky pair of parathyroids, I had a 16 mg/dL. You could have sharpened my nose and used me on a chalkboard. I was doing 100 000 IU a week for 3 months. One cute little throat cutting later and my problem was solved [apparently when they remove parathyroids your issue pretty much stops instantly.

Though now my doc is really scrupulous about checking my blood panels and consulting with another specialist about micronutrients - I still take a lower amount of vitamin D, and try to get a certain amount of sunlight every week. On the plus side, I no longer take any of the osteoporosis meds, my bone density scans have been excellent for someone on her way to living in a bucket

Yeah, I was discovered to have a pretty bad Vitamin D deficiency. Since I'm gluten-free I can't really have cereal, which is the only time I have milk, and I almost never go outside.

I'm on one 5000 UI a day. I can't really tell if it's been helping or not, but I know the magnesium she also prescribed (because my nerves weren't healing right from my jaw surgery) has. I touched ice to the bottom of my chin--since the surgery I feel it on the top of my chin too--and I only felt it on like, the up-right side as well.

My mother was on some insane number. She has an oral kind, and drops it into her coffee every morning. She says it pushes her from 'sleeping forever' to 'HIIIIII!!!'

Sweet jumping Jebus - the hypercalcemia sleepies are hell - I was doing a red bull every 2 hours trying to stay awake and still almost fell asleep a few times a day. I was thrilled when I responded to the vitD and the actonel! Though I was more thrilled when getting the evil parathyroids cut out stopped the problem and let me go off the actonel and huge IU vitD.

I'm on an over-the-counter D supplement; my doctor and my pharmacist work in the same building so they cross-consult from time to time about their trickier patients.

In my case it's simply photophobia that has me low on vitamin D. Sunlight hurts my eyes, and I can get sunburn after 10 mins in the shade.

OP, you might want to consider calling the doc and scheduling an appointment. Explain that the call about your blood work did not answer any of your questions, nor explain what was going on. This way, the doc knows the one who called you wasn't helpful in that regard and you get to ask your questions too.
If I make no sense, I apologize. I'm constantly interrupted by an actual toddler.

That's a good idea, and I'm thinking of looking for a different primary care as well.

The sad thing is, she never even mentioned scheduling an appointment to come back for a follow-up on the bloodwork.

Even when I got the bloodwork, they never said anything specifically about any type of vitamin D. All it said on the lab order was "vitamin D." I don't know what I was expecting. I guess I should have asked more questions.
Always ask questions if you don't understand something. Your provider is obligated to make sure you understand your treatment and the need for it.

Call the office and ask for a copy. You may have to pay for the copy; pay it, especially if you're going to get a second opinion. If you otherwise like your provider, there may be no reason to change, but there's never anything wrong with getting a second opinion.

There are definately differences between Vit D2 and D3.

D3 is also called cholecalciferol. D2 is also called ergocalciferol. D3 can be synthesized from the skin and is how most people get their Vit D, besides dietary ingestion. Vitamin D is important to regulate calcium and phosphorus, which are essential to bone health. Vit D deficiencies can lead to rickets.

You're right that the benefits of one vs the other are controversial. That's why you need a second opinion. There could be a very good reason why one is better than the other for you, but this was not well explained to you. I agree you should seek another opinion, and get an answer to that question rather than just assume the OTC stuff will work just as well.

Would eating food rich in Vitamin D help?

Depends on what her numbers are. If they're low enough, then no, dietary sources won't be enough.
