There was a guest on the Colbert Report a couple weeks ago who wrote a book on the race card. Actually, it's called The Race Card. I want to check it out next time I stop in the bookstore.
There's also this book and I remember when it came out there was some media attention (not a huge amount) and when we got it in the store we kept it behind the cashwrap because they were worried about customers' reactions to it being out on the shelf.
Personally, I'm about as white as you can get (Irish, German, and Sicilian, but all my coloring comes from the Irish/German side). I have a friend who is black, about as dark as I am pale, and we joke around when things go minorly wrong, it's "cuz yer black." (It all started between him and another friend, who he calls a dirty Jew in return. All in good fun.) But I would never ever use that word, and I have never heard him use it, either. He would never refer to himself that way.
