  • "Cause we're a diner?"

This lady stopped by one of the diner's windows & wanted to know if we sold ciggs. When we told her that we don't sell them she demanded to know why. "Cause we're a diner? is what the cook said. Lady had a fit and stormed off...lol.

I think that years and years ago, restaurants used to sell cigarettes. At the very least, when I was a kid, I remember seeing cigarette vending machines at a lot of them. But I don't know what planet she's on if she hasn't noticed those haven't been around in decades.

Most cities banned such vending machines because there was no way to practically stop kids from using them...Come to think of it, a lot of states have banned smoking in restaurants in the first place.
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

The only place I remember seeing one in recent years was in a bar I used to go to.

And I'm glad they did! It used to be gross eating at a restaurant, even if I was in the non-smoking section, because the whole place would reek. Now I actively avoid places that allow smoking indoors, like bars and casinos.

That happened to me when I was a kid. I bought my first pack of cigarettes in a diner near my school. Unfortunately, someone who saw me knew my father and told him, who confiscated the cigarettes before I even had a chance to open them.

when the laws here in Melbourne came in that banned smoking in any of the following locations:
                  Indoor venues (bars, nightclubs etc)
Outdoor venues under a covered roof
                  Restaurants

I jumped for joy, as a nightclub photographer I'd come home smelling like an ashtray.... and coughing for the next 24-48 hrs.

I remember seeing the cigarette vending machines in the local truck stops and diners when I was a kid. So glad they've disappeared.

Oddly, it was the reverse situation in my house. My dad would buy cigarettes in secret and my brother and I would go poking around in his "secret" locations to find them and throw them away.

Few bars around here still have cigarette vending machines (although, they are a dollar or more a pack than at gas stations), and most bars have a supply of Marlboros and Camels behind the counter for extra than usual, of course.

We can smoke in all casinos around here, I think they all have smoke shops. I know I can go through near a pack in just a couple of hours gambling.

The last time I saw a machine in a building was in the early 90's. It was a pool hall/restaurant in Lock Haven PA. I recall there being that "Must be at least this old" signs around at the time, so maybe it was one of the last holdouts for the area.

The ban on vending machines was probably because it was too easy for an underage person to buy smokes from them (i.e. no human to verify age). I can understand allowing them in bars and casinos because in many jurisdictions you must be a certain age to be present in such an environment. If the "be present" age is equal to or greater than the "buy tobacco" age in a given jurisdiction, then people below "buy tobacco" age won't be able to (legally) gain access to the vending machine.
