    If there are specific (presumably nearby) cities where you plan to job-hunt, perhaps consider making them part of your vacation plans -- spend a day in each of them, scheduling interviews on those days if possible, and check out the general area in which you are thinking of working, to see if it suits you. In the meantime, you'll still have a few hours to check out the local attractions and/or night life.
