  • It's my turn!

The library opens at 9am and about 5 people come in right away. The three desktop computers we have filled up right away, and I have 2 people already asking for laptops. At first I was by myself, and I had to turn on one of the staff terminal. So I get the laptops, get the guys to fill out the forms and this guy comes up and wants to use a desktop. I said I would put him on the list, (let's call him Pete) and he is the first on the list . He must have seen all 3 computers in use, or else he would say something right away. After I put him on the list I tell him that he can go to the second floor and see if there are available computers. I also tell him I'll keep him on the list. By this time my co-worker arrives.

He comes back while I'm checking out a laptop to a person. At the same time one of the guys on a desktop computer gets up to get help from us. So Pete sees an open computer and he says he's going to us it. I tell him someone is using it. He says, "You said I was first on the list." At this point my manager shows up to change the schedule. So she sees everything. Anyway, I tell Pete that the computer is in use, that the guy (and I point) is here asking for help. Pete still doesn't get it, still saying that I told him he was first in the list. To be honest, I'm a really busy so I'm not sugarcoating it, I'm not spending five min. telling him the story I'm telling you. I'm telling him that someone is using it, he (guy on the computer) came up to us for help.

He goes sits down then leaves.

The manager didn't get involved, which is good, but I can imagine her telling me that I should have been more friendly or nicer.

Don't teach me a lesson; all I learn is that you are an asshole.

I'm a firm believer of telling it like it is when its necessary. Being nice in a situation like that just encourages the behavior because it shows the customer you're not going to do anything about it.

Pete needed a clue. You gave it to him. That was kind of you.
