  • So sucky, they gave me nightmares!

I didn't even deal with these SCs the other morning; CW did. I overheard them and was cringing the whole time, though. And later that night, they showed up in an SC nightmare!

    SCs the reality

These couple SCs came in at 9am without a reservation. Fortunately, we did have a room for later that day.

A few things to note: (1) Our checkout isn't until noon. (2) We've been sold-out for over 35 days in a row. (3) Most of our actual check-out guests (only about a dozen rooms a night; the rest are long-terms) like to wait right up until noon to check-out. (4) It's pretty much the same story for any place within an hour's driving distance.

SC: "Do you have any rooms available?"
CW: "I have a couple left to sell tonight. I can make you a reservation. It won't be clean until this afternoon."
SC: "But we've been up all night! Can't I get into one now?"
CW: "We sold out last night. All the rooms are dirty. In fact, the guests are still in the rooms. I have to wait for them to check-out, and then the housekeepers have to clean it."
SC: "So you can sell me a room now, but you won't actually give me the room?"
CW: "I can make you a reservation for a room tonight."

I...don't want to bore you with the dialogue. Just reread the above conversation over and over for about 30 minutes, and you'll get the idea.

Here is a summary of the SC's complaints:

    - They had been going to casinos all night long, and were too tired to drive anymore. (One of these casinos was an hour south...where they very likely could have found a room at 9am, if they'd planned better.)

    - They were upset because they got a ticket for running a red light, and the officer threatened that they wouldn't be allowed back in the country if they ignored the ticket and didn't pay it!

    - They needed a room now!

SC had CW call the casino he'd just left (and gotten a ticket in front of). The casino was already sold out. SC had CW call a few other places. All sold out...you couldn't even reserve a room for a later check-in. SC finally gave up, and said he'd go pay his ticket and then come back and sleep in his car until the room was ready.

Oh, how he ranted about that ticket! SC said the cop accused him of swerving. "But I was just tired!" the SC exclaimed.

Yeah, okay, the cop isn't going to know that (and in the area he was ticketed, those cops deal with a lot of drunk drivers). The SC ranted on and on about how the cop was rude and he knows he stopped and the cop was threatening to ban him from the country! And he knows he stopped!

I wish CW had given him the wrong instructions to the courthouse. Then maybe the next time he tried to come down, Customs would've turned him back.

    SCs the Dream

That night, I had a dream about them. SC and his wife apparently won big during their casino runs in my dream, because they showed up in a fancy white sports car, which they drove into my lobby! Don't ask how, but by some crazy dream-logic, they managed it.

SC: "I need a room for tonight."
Me: "I'm sorry, but we are sold out."
SC: "No, you get me a room. Everywhere else is sold out. I'm tired of driving. Get me a room."
Me: "I don't have a room for tonight."
SC: "Listen, I'm going to run to the bank, and when I get back, you'd better have found me a room!" *SC leaves, with his car and wife still parked in the lobby*

I tried to tell the wife to move the car. I couldn't hear her through the car door, but she was making angry gestures at me.

Me: "Ma'am, you need to move your car, now."
SCW: *mouthing words I can't hear*
Me: "No, not later, not when he gets back, right now."
SCW: *talking angrily, can't hear her*

I called a tow truck, but they couldn't figure out how to get it hooked up through the lobby doors, so I called the police. They arrived about the same time SC returned.

I can't remember any of the dream after that. I just remember being so frustrated and mad at them.

I hate it when SCs invade my dreams.

LOL, isn't there a commercial being aired lately with someone in a sports car driving thru a fast food place (and I don't mean the actual drive thru) - maybe that infringed as well? At least in your dreams you can treat SC's any way you want.

As for the real SC, have they never stayed in a hotel before? Check-ins are always in the afternoon, and check-outs during the morning. Logic (oops, forgot, SCs are logic challenged) says that if each person needs a room overnight, there has to be a gap between one guest checking out and another checking in, at least until someone locates the magic cleaning wands. Yeah, sometimes you can get really lucky and be allowed to check in early to a previously unused room, IF one exists - but it's a special circumstances, not the norm, especially since in that case they're giving you hours of room time for free.

Also, when checking into a hotel, information from hotel to guest is normally relevant. Most information from guest to hotel is not. The hotel either has a room available, or not. They also either have a cleaned room ready for early check-in, or not. No amount of information from the guest (how tired they are, how far they've driven, how many cops have stopped them, or even how important/how much money they have are going to change those two basic facts).

    Madness takes it's toll....
    Please have exact change ready.

Did the SC actually reserve a room for that night, or did he just return later without a reservation after all the available rooms had been taken?

Well, why not? Work dreams tend to stress you out, just like real work. You wake up all tense and irritated and even more exhausted than you were when you went to bed. Least they can do is pay you for it!

So what if he wasn't drunk? So many hours of sleep deprivation are equivalent to so many blood alcohol points. It's been studied and charted. Just pay the ticket.

@Merriweather You are being far too nice. SC's are to logic what water is to lava...ok maybe not even THAT close of a relationship. It is not only something they do not know, it is a totally foreign concept they have never even heard of.

That's because it's illegal to drive when you're too tired to stay awake.

At that point the cops would be more lenient if say... they'd found the driver parked on the side of the road for a quick nap, vs being a dumbass and trying to drive while falling asleep.

Apologies if I've mentioned this before - conversation some years ago after I'd pulled over onto the hard shoulder of a motorway.

                      Me: Oh, Hello Officer
PM: Good Evening Sir, are you alright?
Me: Yes, sorry - I was so tired I couldn't keep my eyes open and had to pull over
PM: Ah, so you were ill then.
Me: ? No, I was tired, I was going to fall asleep
PM: If that were so, I would have to arrest you as it's illegal to sleep on the side of a motorway. Fortunately you were just feeling ill, when it it is legal to pull over. Are you feeling better now Sir?
Me: Much better thank you, I'll just carry on and get a coffee at the first service station I think...
