Polite request - should you choose to store items such as these again please don't store them in plastic bags or enclosed spaces, as I'm sure you're aware wet clothes/shoes will rot particularly quickly in these kinds of conditions and any evidence will degrade pretty much overnight. Pretty much every police station with SOCO/CSI will have a drying room to prevent this from happening.

Oh, I know. We just put them there for a couple of hours (and didn't fully close the safe) 'til the owner could come down to deal with it. He did report it and as I said, nothing ever came of it. This happened well over a year ago.

I personally wouldn't want to tell them that the stains may have come from a pet because they could be stupid enough to go home and beat their animal or drop it off in a shelter or abandon it.
