Used lenses FTW. I'm a A-mount guy (Sony A500), and have a whole pile of Minolta (and compatible) lenses that are tush-loads cheaper than buying brand-new glass. My favorite lens is a 100mm Macro lens with cheesy and horrible-sounding plastic gearing that somehow manages to take spectacular photos, both as macro and as a decent portrait lens.
MD or Maxxum? I suspect from "plastic gearing" that you mean Maxxum (autofocus). That's unfortunate - I've got a fair number of manual-focus Minolta lenses.
