  • Being at the complete mercy of another department...

I work in the counting room of a casino. As you might guess, such a job requires a very HIGH level of security. We must be let in and out of the room by a security guard , regardless of why we are leaving (bathroom/break/end of day/etc.) and have our uniforms searched.

In order for us to do what we do, we use special keys. The keys are kept in a locked container. Our department has one key, security has the other.

In other words, we CANNOT do out job until security shows up with their keys.

So we are at the whim of security in two main situations:

    - When we are waiting to enter the room at the start of the day
    - When we are waiting to leave the room, either for break or to leave at the end of the day.

That may not necessarily sound so bad, but the security department is...not without its issues. The other day we had to wait 45 MINUTES for a security guard to show up and release us for our break. It's also not unheard of for us to have to wait 30 minutes to leave at the end of the day. Awhile back we were almost 40 MINUTES late getting into the room at the start of the day because of a key snafu with security.

Unfortunately, due to extremely tight regulations and policy, both with the casino and the local gaming bureau, we can't change anything about this set up. We just have to make do as best we can.

It gets pretty annoying sometimes when our jobs are made harder by another department that has a tough time getting its act together.

At least you are on the clock during these delays...

    ...

    Right?

I beg to differ. The casino could change the security staff.

Is there a way for you to leave the room in an emergency, even if a security guard isn't present? If not, contact OSHA. That's a dangerous situation, not to mention tantamount to unlawful imprisonment.

Oh yes, we are physically unable to clock out until AFTER we leave the room.

This is a very good question I do not have an answer to. I know we have policies and procedures in place for emergencies, but I am not sure of the particulars. I will ask someone about that.

That's part of the problem. They've had an issue maintaining staffing levels in security. It's not just us being affected, other areas are experiencing problems as well.

So anyone needing to use the bathroom has to wait up to 45 minutes? Guess I'd be asking to pee every hour then, just to make sure my bladder was empty. I'm not about to sit there bouncing and twisting, trying to hold it because security can't be arsed to show up. I wonder if that's an OSHA thing too, it's at least a labor board issue. I pity anyone who has a medical condition where bathroom issues occur suddenly and without notice.

Only one of the managers at the swamp lives in town. The others have to drive some distance to get there.

Every once in a blue moon, this means waiting in my car 5 minutes or more for the opening manager to get in and open the store, if he/she is running late.

And that means having to stay later at the end of my shift, so it doesn't screw me out of pay and make it look like I came in late and left early.

Before The Jerk bothered to provide me with keys to the store, I was often waiting outside in the heat/cold with a few customers. The store opened at noon, yet he wouldn't roll up until 12:15 (or later). The regulars knew this, 'normal' shoppers did not and I'm betting that lost him a lot of business.

One day in particular during the Christmas season I counted no fewer than a dozen casual customers walk up, peer in the windows, ask me where the owner was and share my frustration at not being allowed to open when I'm supposed to, and walk away (one brave soul who bought me a coffee and waited with me lit into The Jerk when he showed up; it was below freezing and blowing snow outside).

First time I called security and had to wait 45 minutes to go to the bathroom they would open the door to find a big pool of piss and me with some paper towels telling them to clean it up.
