  • Amazing disappearing DVD drive

My computer keeps "forgetting" that it has a DVD/CD drive. I restart the computer, and like magic, it's there again. But after a couple of hours, it's gone again. Which means for a while, it'll play CDs, burn them, etc and the drive is on the ol' list under My Computer. It then disappears from that list, and the drive no longer functions.

I'm running windows vista home premium. Any ideas?

1: The cable connecting the drive to the mother board may be going bad or coming lose (more likely it is going bad as it coming lose while the computer is powered on will completely FUBAR the drive in most cases).

2: The drive itself may be going bad.

Unless you are comfortable with opening your computer and tinkering around you could have a friend who knows this sort of thing check it out, or take it into a computer store to have it checked out.
