Altough it's not always the same, for example there are troy ounces and common (avoirdupois) ounces.. and troy ounces are afaik still in use for gold.

So a pound of gold is not the same as a pound of lead.

Troy ounces weigh more than avoirdupois ounces, so an ounce of gold is heavier, but there are only 12 ounces to a troy pound so a pound of gold is lighter.
