  • What does my laptop need to connect to Starbucks wifi?

I have a laptop that is wifi enabled.

I took it to work one day, and tried to use it at the Starbucks inside the store, that has wifi access.

There was an open wifi network, but no internet access.

Do I need to buy something for my laptop so I can get on the internet at that Starbucks?

You may need to buy access from the Starbucks.

      $tarbuck$(US) website says it's free...

My experience with my tablet is that most have a "terms and condtions" page that may be obscured by my browser preloading my home page.

Maybe refresh your page or open a new tab/window?

Apparently Google provisions their WiFi and here is Google's link: https://www.starbucks.com/coffeehouse/wireless-internet

I have run into problems on WiFi networks that require you to accepts T&Cs before.

When you open your browser and attempt to go to a site, the network is suppose to redirect you the T&Cs site. Once you accept, you can go where you want.

Sometimes the redirect fails to work and my browser flags the attempt as unsecured and a possible session hijack attempt.

Sometime I have to try a couple of different site before the redirect will work. Going to an https: site is more likely to have problems. Try going to an http: site.

If it is someplace you go to frequently, once you get to the T&C page, book mark it. Next time, connect and use the bookmark.

Our IT guy just mentioned this very scenario last week when they were setting up our new work laptops. Used to be that you could access Google (and would usually be redirected to the T&C page) but apparently that doesn't work anymore. Try CNN.com or some other news source. Should redirect you.

The problem is that most peoples default pages is HTTPS, so the browser will reject the redirect. Best bet is to go to a site you know is http only.

Otherwise, update your OS. Its becoming an issue and now most computers/phones/tablets will notice the redirect and simply have a notification for you to click that says something like "Click here to sign into the WiFI."
