  • Sorry for not wanting to endanger children

I have a call at an elementary school. What better time to schedule a call than right at the beginning of school hours on a Monday? Oh, that's right, how about any time.

I was a little confused about the scope of work coming in, and the "office manager" was completely useless, I "had to wait for the principal", who was in a "meeting". Half an hour later, his 5 minute meeting finally ended. I finally get the privilege of speaking to Mr high and mighty. Now the picture is clearer and, while simple, it is currently impossible. They want a complete reconfigure of the furniture in the front office. Easy enough for me, but not only do they not have a single thing packed, they are still working at those desks.

A few calls to my office and they tell me to leave, I don't have time to wait around for them to get things prepared. I come back and tell them that the call will have to be re-scheduled. The desks have to be completely emptied and I can't have anyone working at them for the 2-4 hours that the work will take me. I should have just left things at that, but I was also quite concerned about the number of children that they allow to just wander around in the office, so I mention that it would probably be best to schedule things on an off day because I'm not comfortable with the safety of these children while I do the work.

I can tell that this guy is an arrogant douche by the way he speaks and carries himself, but other than that, he seemed to be nice enough here. He gives me a friendly sign off and even apologizes.

Okay, great, so now the only detail is who pays for this call today, but that's an office problem. Until of course, it becomes a me problem. You see, it wasn't the fact that the desks were fully packed and occupied, with people unwilling to vacate to allow me to do the work. No, that had nothing to do with it, I just didn't want to do the work because kids were around. And we should have know that kids would be around on a Monday morning, so we shouldn't have scheduled it for that time; it's our mistake, they don't want to pay.

Okay, obviously a mistake was made here on everybody's part. You were idiots for thinking that we were going to heave around 100 lb pieces of furniture while your workers carried on their daily routine and kids danced around our feet. And my office were idiots for not knowing that you were idiots, and not telling you that we don't have magic wands that just instantly transfer furniture around.

But you sir are a douchebag, a douchebag that I really feel like reporting. Oh, you saw nothing wrong with me doing this work while children are around? I was the only one who saw a problem with this? Okay, how about I ask that parent of the 2 year old who walked right into me if she thinks it's a good idea for me to be holding a 100 lb hutch while her daughter is walking there. You think that would go over well?

I hope your company will refuse to do anything until basic requirements are met ... as in, the desks are empty and more importantly, the children are GONE.

Otherwise, perhaps they can move the furniture themselves ... ?

        Health and Safety

The company I worked for could never afford to fight and lose a million dollar lawsuit against them.

So the rule was simple, NO WORK IF CONDITIONS WERE NOT SAFE.

And this rule applied no matter how high or mighty someone thought they were.

One guy claimed he could get the mayor of the city involved, I love how my boss responded. "No problem, I can talk to him this weekend while we play golf together.".

Did I mention this was Friday, so the boss will be seeing the mayor the following day.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's not an option for EH. I mean, you've read his other posts, right? His employer is a company that, when things are slack, will actively search for buses that they can throw EH under. Odds are that they will side with the SC and blame EH for the entirety of the problem.

I think you should report him, for exactly those reasons. Someone who has no concerns for the safety of the children in his care has no business being a school principal.
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

I agree completely. If he acts like this to EH, he probably has the same unsafe or uncaring attitude in other situations too. And, as someone who works in an elementary school, nothing happens unless you go to the higher ups. Go as high towards the superintendent as you can.

Or go sideways to the local newspaper. They love stories like this.

When I did an internship at a school district I had to fill out a bunch of paperwork, and even after that I was required to have a school employee escort me everywhere there could be students present, because I didn't have a background check. They even had special bathrooms that only staff had keys for, so there was no chance of being around a kid. It was in the IT department, so it wasn't like I was a teachers aid or something.

My point is, I had to do all that, but the school can just hire people and let them wander the hallways and move heavy objects with kids darting around like puppies on espresso? The fact that the school tried to get out of paying for it (did they end up having to pay?) absolutely doesn't surprise me. There's something about schools, and some offices that seems to make very interesting SCs. They're the type who expect everyone to conform to the same office rules they do, and have a blank-minded confidence that everyone will fall into line. "This task did not get accomplished, so we will not pay." Regardless of the why. I feel like I'm not capturing the attitude clearly, but I dealt with it a lot at the roofing company, and it was a different sort of SC.

My MiM have actually lightened up a bit. Loosing a dozen good employees and looking at the roster and realizing that with only three functional supervisors left, they cannot afford to lose another woke them up a bit. I told my side of the story and that was that, like I said, there's fault on both sides but I'm more inclined to blame the customer for being stupid over my company for failing to assume they would be stupid and inform of requirements. But overall, not my problem.

I could go about filing a complaint, or going to a newspaper, but then he tells his side of the story and things get fuzzy and I wind up getting slaughtered. He'll screw up again around the wrong person and get his.

Everyone in my company has undergone background checks for the confidential information we always work with, not sure if that was a requirement for us to work here, but it's something we all have.

                        God what idiots.

Too bad you weren't working at my old company. When they decided to move my division to a different set of cubicles, the dudes from maintenance or wherever literally starting moving our stuff while we were working. I was on the phone with a customer and some guy walked up and just picked up a rack full of folders from my desk and walked away with it. I had customer info, rate sheets, etc., in there, and for all he knew I might need that stuff for the phone call I was on at that moment. I'm surprised they didn't grab my chair and roll me away in it!

Or pack up the phone and/or computer while you're busy with them...

Still, it's not HIS problem if you're without materials needed for the job... that brings in revenue for the company...
