  • 5 things MTV could do to bring themselves back

    http://www.tvguide.com/News/MTV-Birt...h-1035883.aspx

I have to agree with a lot of this.

1 - I never watched the real world so I won't comment but,

2 - Remote Control? YES! What about that show where they pitched older graduates against younger ones (like Class of 1982 vs. Class of 1992)?

3 - The original Beavis & Butthead was great. People are too afraid to do TV like this now (Ren & Stimpy, anyone?)

4 - Yes, or just play MUSIC. It's MUSIC Television, not Reality Television.

5 - I can do without this but it was always popular.

Play videos 24/7 just like they used to in the 80's. It's MUSIC televsion. That's the reason why MTV became famous in the first place. It used to be incredibly influential.
I stopped watching MTV sometime in the early 90's because it got away from what made it MUST SEE in the first place. Somewhere along the way it got away from the music.
The way MTV is now compared to how it looked like when it first premiered is so vastly different, its like it became a parody of itself.

100% music (untl the late 1980's) was nice but I do have to admit some shows did add value.

Remember Buzz Cuts (or Buzz Shots?)

Now, let's go further back - who remembers "Friday Night Videos"? I remember seeting up the Betamax to record it every Friday night.

Betamax was technologically superior to VHS but Betamax got clobbered into extinction by VHS's better advertisment.

Not quite,Sony refused to license Betamax & so kept the prices high.Damn, what was the company that bought the rights to VHS? Anyway, that company did license the technology & so prices came down as availability soared.Sony shot themselves in the foot.

the video recorder was invented by an American company,Ampex, but when they tried to get investors interested they were told "Why would anyone want to watch a TV show twice?" so they sold it

I remember that! That was my only video option when we lived in northern Arizona, because we didn't get cable service in my neighborhood, and the satellite programming we had didn't include MTV.

I stopped watching when they basically started focusing on rap and nonmusic crap. I also stopped watching most Comedy Central when they stopped showing stand up comedy and comedy focus shows like Who's Line is it.

I do not like reality tv, I have a life, I want to escape the problems of roommates, kitchens, jobs, rent and all that shite. I do not want to see a bunch of entitlement whores living it up in a beach house having imaginary problems. I do not want to watch anything like that at all. I may watch an occasional game show [my mum loves Jeopardy a lot] and I might watch the Olympics [not into watching sports, I always preferred playing them] I like SF/fantasy, documentaries that are reasonably accurate, and movies. The only stuff of what could remotely be called reality tv is stuff like Iron Chef Japan, anything with Mike Holmes on it [hubba, he has some cute workers] occasionally Entitlement Whores and Entitlement Whores International for the beautiful houses and some of the cooking shows as food porn.

I think it would be great to see a music channel actually focus on playing music all the time, and with cable now they could have a rock channel, a rap channel, an electronica channel, a country channel, a classic channel - like the sound only music focus channels, just with videos. [and yes I will set my tv on a music sound only channel when there isn't anything palatable to watch, usually either light classical or electronica]

Less reality shows, more music videos (old and new) and I'd LOVE to see them bring back Daria, Ren & Stimpy and Beavis and Butthead.

Been there, done that. And now they are both gone.

But the 5 things MTV can do?

                    1. Play music videos

                    2. Play music videos

                    3. Play music videos

                    4. Play music videos

                    5. Play music videos

                    And have VJays again.

And who remembers when Comedy Central used to be HA! and owned by MTV? There was another comedy channel too but I don't remember what it was called, but they merged into CC.

I haven't watched MTV in, oh, about a decade or so. Is Total Request Live still on? I remember my little sister watched that religiously. My interested in the channel waned when Beavis & Butthead and Daria went off the air.

I believe it actually was called "The Comedy Channel."

And now I'm thinking back to the Joel/Dr. Forrester & TV's Frank era of Mystery Science Theater 3000.

My sophomore year (high school) English teacher's son was a contestant on Remote Control. We watched the episode in class (As I recall, he never actually received his prizes, though, or maybe only partially received them.)

It hasn't been "Music" TV for over a year:

                              http://www.rollingstone.com/music/ne...-logo-20100209

MTV became more reality-based after the Internet boom and people started flocking to YT to see music videos. They can go to hundreds of sites for music news.
