  • Nervous about this, has anyone done it?

So I just got a new job with a racial slur in its first name . it's kinda funny because people don't seem to notice/care. >.> Anyhoo, this new job offers free mental therapy, but I'm wondering if I should use it? I've been fighting with depression for a long time and people had suggested I go talk to someone but one: It's too expensive, and two: I don't like talk to strangers about my problems because...IDK. I feel they will judge me, I guess? Still maybe venting to a live human being will help me cope better. But I'm nervous. What if they say something to my employer, since it's thru them? They say they won't, but should I trust them? I don't trust them, and their counselors are probably untrained, but some therapy is better than none right?
Has anyone else done this and was it all ok?
    Can't reason with the unreasonable.

Never took advantage of something like that.

    Things to consider:
Do you get a choice of mental heath providers?
Check the reputation of the providers offered.
Patient confidentiality. If they tell your employer, you will be able to retire off the settlement.

Well. First, a competent counselor will not judge you. You cannot shock them, bore them, or tell them something they haven't heard before. I didn't know where to start either, but once I got in there I couldn't stop talking. They will know what to ask to get you talking, and YOU decide what to talk about. If they try to force you to talk about something, they aren't the right counselor for you. Try again.

That said, if you don't trust them, maybe your gut instincts are warning you about these people in particular. A competent, honest therapist will never discuss your details with your employer. HIPAA laws forbid it.

As csquared said, look into it and find out more about the providers. If they are licensed behavioral specialists, that's good. Also Google the providers' names and see if you can find any reviews, keeping in mind that some people just like to complain, or may not have been a good fit with those providers; but a large number of negative reviews, just like with anything else, could be a red flag.

The important thing is that if you feel you need to talk to someone, don't give up on finding someone. Many places offer sliding scales for payment. I paid $40 about once every 4 to 6 weeks and it was the best thing I ever paid for. If my health care place hadn't closed I would go again (I don't know where my counselor ended up when the place closed )
When you start at zero, everything's progress.

I was skeptical of therapy until I tried it. It’s wonderful to have someone listening just to you for the hour. You can tell them anything and they will help you figure it out. Many employers offer coverage for mental health. Your boss and coworkers should never be told that you are using the service. Somewhere, someone who does budget will know they paid for 14 sessions this month for all those who went. If you want to try it, then try it.

This bears repeating. I currently see a psychologist about once every 6-8 weeks (have been slowly increasing the gap between visits to work on my coping skills) and whenever I've mentioned something that sounds weird in my mind, she has never judged me, just looked past it.

Generally, a competent practitioner will really have "seen it all," so to speak. I've found this is a great way to reduce nerves when you're in the emergency department for whatever reason. (eg "I'm sure you've seen far weirder cases than mine!")

Sounds like this is part of an EAP. Definitely worth at least looking into.

I can't imagine your sessions with the counselor being anything but totally confidential. You'd have a hell of a lawsuit if they told your bosses about the things you said.

General rule of thumb is that there are a few situations where confidentiality can be breached, but not with your employer. Those situations are:

              - You're planning on killing yourself.

              - You're planning on harming someone else, or you're harming someone else.

              - You're in court for whatever reason (this can run the gamut from criminal charges through to family court)

              - If you're under 18, you're being abused at home.

On another tack for a moment... you got a job with a racial slur as its first name? That's your job title? Or the company name?
I'm now wondering what exactly your new job is....

I’m pretty sure I know but not sure I should say. Think restaurant.

Your instinct to not out the OP without permission is correct.
However, I am curious also and your hint hasn't helped.

I can think of lots of restaurant jobs with multi-part names (like Maitre d' or Sou Chef), and lots of racial slurs (like ... I probably shouldn't give examples, but I know some obscure ones).
