This one is s sighting by proxy.

Roomie went to WrongHelp store a little earlier today, there was one cashier on duty (not very busy, so that was cool); there were 2 registers at her counter; this is important. The lady ahead of said roomie had 20 or so items, but what went wrong was this -- when the cashier tried to ring up the first item, the register just beeped at her a few times. After the 3rd try or so, the custy offered to go grab another box of that item, in case it was a messed up code or something. Again, no serious problem there.

Then...the cashier went ahead and tried another item. Beeps. Then another. Beeps. Then another. One would think that a rational person would have suspected something wrong with the register/scanner at this point, right?

NOPE! The cashier went ahead and tried & failed to scan all 20 or so items in her basket, Beeps every time. She got frustrated, called over a manager, and rang the lady up on the other register without any problems. Meanwhile, the manager went to the problem machine, hit a few keys, *taktaktak*, and said "No problem, it's fixed now!".

The cashier responded by just sorta staring at him for a minute, unmoving...until people asked her to continue ringing up the order where she was instead of just standing there with a deer-in-the-headlights look on her face x.x

Sad.

Ye gods. I've done cashiering and will likely do it again ... when you get 2 or 3 random items that won't scan, how could you fail to consider it might be the machine??

What we do is this: if the item simply refuses to go through we scan 3 more times then
It goes into one of
Our other computers we have telling the operator to put a price
On it. Or, if we know the price we input the price via the. "generic way" and scan an override card. This forces it to go through. Although that is a last ditch effort to be only used when it's damn near the end of the world... Because Heaven knows we don't want to loose out on a few cents difference if the price is wrong.
