  • Please stop leaving your handicapped child alone. Thank you.

its bad enough when parents leave their perfectly coherent and mentally sound children lying around, but when they leave a challenged kid to fend for himself...well, that's new levels of wrong.

i was walking to the music department when this shrieking/howling/ sound fills the air. thinking that someone was either getting killed or having happy time with a chair, i went to investigate. (never one to pass up a murder or a porno. )

instead, i see a boy of about 8-ish come blazing out of the bathroom and crouch by a chair. i waited for a second, hoping to see a parent or something come and get him, but no. the boy screamed for a good 2 minutes before ambling away. i followed him, and he was kind of crying, so i asked him if he was lost. at which point he shouts "THERE'S MONSTERS IN THERE!" i told him there were no monsters here and asked where his mom was. then he said "i dunno. where mom?"

oh dear. he starts walking back to the bathroom and i see an older child that looked like he could be related. i pointed him out and asked the howler if that was his brother. the brother called him over and asked "why'd you do that?"

i lingered for a few more minutes before going back to work. i never saw a parent. im assuming he/she was in the bathroom and that the older boy, who was maybe 10, was supposed to be keeping an on his little brother. howler looked/sounded/acted like he was not...in possession of all his faculties.

i dunno. kind of a slippery slope. on the one hand, if you gotta pee you gotta pee, but on the other, leaving a 10 year old in charge of a handicapped child doesn't seem like a good idea either.

Should've hopped on the PA and declared a Code Adam. If no one came in 5 minutes, you contact Children Services and the police. That is absolutely deplorable. As I said, in my last job I worked security at a..."childcare"...facility. In any case, we'd get all kinds...those who thought they were thug gangstas, those were REALLY WERE thug gangstas (ironically, typically calmer), all around problem children, over-dosers, withdraw kids, and much much more. Surprisingly, a lot of them were pretty socialable.

It was always painful, though, to see kids who are in a lot of trouble and not really being able to do much about it. In any case, whoever the acting guardian of the kid was (slightly older brother doesn't count obviously) wasn't doing their job. That's F'd up.
