"Super Mario Bros. Z" was a Flash animated series created by Mark "Alvin Earthworm" Haynes on Newgrounds back in the day. It drew heavily from Dragonball Z, and featured Mario, Luigi & Yoshi teaming up with Sonic & Shadow the Hedgehogs to try and find the Chaos Emeralds before the nigh-unstoppable robot Metal Sonic can. It was arguably one of the most popular series on Newgrounds.
Then Haynes lashed out against fans, since the only question he seemed to get whenever he went online was "When's the next episode coming out?" So he seemingly abandoned the project.
Then last year, he said he was going to relaunch the series, making use of improved animating skills, and got backing on Patreon for it.
Last week, Episode 1 of the rebooted SMBZ went live.
It has improved graphics and animation, all right, and still follows the basic structure of the original version of Episode 1, though it swapped a Kart Race for Smash Tournament Finals.
