So I started training last Tues. at the bookstore (which involved going through a book in training mode) and worked a register Fri, Sat. and Mon. Mon. I was left alone during lunchtime. I only needed help one time when I was by myself, but sometimes I needed help the other times so I'm ok.
Last time I was a cashier was when I worked at Walgreens sometime like '92-'94. At the library I never was trained on a register.
Behind the counter at the book store, there are Exam books and media that are most likely will get stolen, like books on cd, cds, and dvds/blue rays. In fact, one day a cw got a cd from behind the desk to give to a customer. Customer wanders off or spend times looking at the thing because a few min. latter she walks around the rope blocking the area, and gets behind the counter. A diff. cw tells her, "you can't be back here" and the customer says, "She gave me this." Now, considering the first cw had to go behind the counter to get you an item, and did not tell you to go behind the counter to get the item yourself in the first place, maybe you should get the clue that you are not suppose to be behind the counter.
But my story involve the exam books. The woman training me never showed me the exam books, or where the cds/dvds/blue rays were. Luckily I recognize the exam books from working at the library, and the media items are obvious. Sat. A young woman, college age comes up to me. She was speaking fast (she actually sounded like Stewie from Family Guy). Now I'm used to people speaking fast, so I could understand her until she got really specific. I was understanding she was asking for "the EXIT EC-6 General" So I go to the Exam books trying to find what she is asking for. I go back to her, asking her to write down what she said, and of course she gets an attitude, telling me, "why can't you find it?"
So she writes "EC 6 General". I go back. I see "TExES Core Studies EC 6" and "TExES General." So I take her both books and she gets the one she wants, looks through it to make sure the book I got her is what she wants. Now at my new job we have to push Mastercard onto people. Which sucks but you know how corporations are. Since she looks like a college student, I tell her, "would you like to sign up for The BookStore Mastercard? It's a great way to build your credit." Now I understand people not liking being pushed into signing up for credit cards, so I sort of understand her being brusque (and kind of nasty) but, you know, being an adult means acting like an adult and not like a 12 year old told to eat her veggies. She said, in a very "you suck!" tone of voice, "No, why would I want that, I don't have credit." Also, obviously she didn't here the part about building credit by getting credit cards. But again, I do know people might react negatively. And I'm stuck having to push these things, bleh.
