We get people from the county jail in our ER pretty frequently. I happened to be discharging a guy who came from there with 2 guards and as I'm going over his instructions I start out how I usually do... "So, the doctors sending you HOME with xxx....." As soon as I said it, I realized my fault and stopped talking. Both prison guards in the corner start cackling. I look up at the patient and he manages a smirk. I think he could see I was mortified a having said he was being sent home....
He got himself together and on his way out he generously thanked me for the Pepsi I had given him earlier. He apparently hadn't had one in 3.5years.
