I admit it, I'm a bit rusty when it comes to fixing computers.

MIL's pc won't connect to the internet.

I'm going over there tonight to see if I can figure out what's wrong.

I have a MCSA that I haven't used in years and way back years ago I was on the resolution team of a large DSL ISP.

I have a decent chance of figuring this out... if I can get my faulty memory to kick in.

Heh - start with the basics and you'll be fine.

      - Cables connected?
      - Four lights?
      - Turn everything off and on again.

If it still doesn't work after that, that's when things start getting complicated.

A friend asked me a while back if I had any IT/programming experience, as another friend of hers was looking to hire somebody. I told her to tell him that the last time I did any programming it was in C+ on a UNIX machine. She had no idea what that meant, so I assured her that he would. She got back to me and said he just grinned and laughed, and seconded my opinion that my skills might be a little rusty.

Well, it was a pretty easy fix.

          1) restart modem
          2) reset modem
          3) restart computer

          Boom! Fixed.

I told her next time she has issues try that, then call me if it still doesn't work.

90 percent of all computer problems can be resolved with either a reboot or a reformat.

Now you are responsible for everything that goes wrong:

Printer does not work it is your fault she ran out of ink.

Browser history full of porn sites and she has virus in her machine, your fault.

Software for a Mac does not install, your fault.

              And the list goes on.

At first she wanted her son to come over and look at it, but he was unavailable until the weekend.

I'm sure she'll still turn to him, then me as a secondary.
