  • New job "joys"

Mods please move this if needs be, thank you!

I've been at this new job for a little over a month now. I'm an inventory specialist for REGIS (not its real name, of course), which basically means I'm one of those people with the funky calulators at their hip or on their hand. Its not a hard job, really. Sometimes merc. is too heavy for me but that's what our "customers'" that hang around us are for.

But I knew from the first week that this job was going to be "fun", when a patron at our training store asked me for something. I apologized and told him I didn't work for the store. He then proceeded to laugh and say "Don't work for 'em but get paid, huh?" , yeah, that's going to be said a lot. We don't help our customers' customers. We send them to the right people and go on counting. Counting counting counting.

My team mainly handles the Land of the Orange apron. So I get to see all sorts of fun mechandise, and get sick of it immediately after I say I like it. This is going to ruin my love for Orange apron stores I've only really worked in two Orange apron stores so far, but I've also worked at a Bullseye, a Ustoys, and a couple Coals. This is not a hard job... but its not a fun one either.

For one thing, we have to be very competitive. Always have to move faster, try to beat the other counters. Get those numbers up. Faster, faster, faster! We have to be out at a certain time, but we don't get bonuses unless we get out before then. Its feels like they're spurring us to fight each other. It sucks, but what can we do? We get paid a decent enough amount and the faster you get the more money you get. Which is pretty nice, really.

But then we get to the managers... My Scary Boss Lady, SBL, is notorious for threatening to fire someone over every little thing. Not fast enough? Speed up or you'll be fired! Get lost on the way to the store? Get directions or you'll be fired! Don't know where your supposed to meet, or get told the wrong meet site? Pay more attention or you'll be fired! On and on and on... But oddly enough, if you come in high (which I've seen people come in like that before) and she thinks its cool. Come in drunk (also have seen) she'll laugh and poke fun at you. Yeah, joys...

And we have a new DM... who is younger then I am! I'm 24 and he's only 22... He's great, really, I like him. He's strict, but easy to talk to. Faaaar easier to talk to then SBL. He's one of those really charismatic types, and that fact he's younger then I am and already a DM is rather inspiring. But apparently he's our third DM in a short period of time. But the others admit that the fact he's with us when we go to our stores and working with us, and everything is better then the others. Only trouble is, he does sound like a politican, promising this and that, and the other thing... We'll have to see though.

Soooo yeah... new job. New joys.... Huzzah.

We get large groups of you guys at my motel all the time. Come say hi to me!

If I actually call it "REGIS" around the employees, I get "NO! You can't call it that! It's R-E-G-I-S!"

Behind their backs, tho, it's Regis!

Heh, I'll have to do just that! My team apparently got new stores in other states, (DE, PA, MA, VA....) so you never know! If you see a youngish looking, shy, round chick with red hair and looking like a deer caught in head-lights that's probably me.

My team calls our-selves Regis, I haven't heard anyone fuss about it, but I'm only a month in, I don't know any better

Heh, i did that until i was fired in Dec (i think i put up a thread about it somewhere here) with D259. Lets see, new young manager... Elias, right? Tell him Joe says hi. Its not a bad job, and the new focus on performance metrics is a double edged sword, back in the old day there was either no metrics or it was classified, which meant raises and bonuses were few and far between, and with no explanation of how you got them. Interesting set of stores, when i did it, there were only two store chains we were responsible for, and occasionally we helped the locals out when we weren't busy ifn we wanted to..

As to the work itself, when we switched to the new style just in time for the Hawaii trip, i specialized in tools/hardware overheads, and then joined the floor on the opposite side of the store. Still, loved doing overheads, its easy to keep your numbers up with that, especially the ones i did.

Good luck with the job, it can be a good one if you can live with the travel.

These days they don't get to big on it for the most part at the DM or lower level, and its RGIS, not Regis (i did in the old days have a company that had it as Regis in their procedures, and yes, i worked for them several times over the last 20+ years). If anyone cares, that used to stand for Retail Grocery Inventory Specialists, back before they were RGIS, LLC.

Javarod I think you were in the notorious West Coast district with their hawaii trips and things. I'm on the East Coast and our new DM came from Colorado, his name is Nick.

I'm actually going to be the new CDO, when I get through training. No overheads for me which sucks, cause those are easy! And yeah, once I get those stupid numbers up, I'll be better off. Just have to get used to it. Though the machines are heavy, and I've yet to get a rm-1 that would work with a laser.

REGIS! You girls came to my store when I worked for the Dollar Tree back in NC! Man, when you count fast you REALLY count fast!

Of course, someone also messed up my inventory on the whoopie cushions and I'd gotten 3 cases when I already had 2 worth because someone didn't input the numbers in right. Ah, well. We were still working on them when I left for the Mid-West (...is NM considered mid-west or west coast?).
Now a member of that alien race called Management.

Yeah, you see that right. Pink. Harness.

I wondered, 'cause our Area Manager left, and i know they were trying to kick him upstairs, so i figured it was him. I'm actually watching a company called Quantum Services, one i'd never heard of before that apparently specializes in convenience stores, and there's a second company in that area hiring out here now too, but too many other things going on for me to apply yet.

Heh RWH we have to count fast, its part of the training. My team can get an Orange Apron done before 2:45pm, after starting at 5:45am. One of my team mates said they can sometimes get out at 12pm. We've even done a UsToys in only 4 hours, heh.

Javarod, yeah I don't think its him. Unless your old manager was like 18 or so... the DM is only 22. I still can't get over the fact I'm older then he is.

No, its not him, i'm just surprised. We used to do that too, our record the old two day way was 9 hours to do a whole store with a 16 person crew. As to the age, no surprise, i was older than my DM, AM and most of the crew, and i'm only 37... well, 38 in a week.

The swamp used to use Regis (name changed to protect the innocent) for inventory. A couple years ago they switched to WIS.

With WIS inventory hasn't dragged on as long as it used to inventory night, and there are fewer mistakes. But that could be because we have less merchandise in the store now than we did then.

when he had inventory one year the cops came in and arrested 10 people from the crew. needless to say inventory had to be redone and that company was never used again

i dont know what kind of gear or program this regis or rgis is but... yeah i'd be calling it regis too.

hell that's what we did in the navy - we pronounced almost everything.
                          AEGIS - Aye-gis. TLAM - tea-lam, DCAG - Dee-Cag.

if it had vowels in it or close enough to pronounce, they did it.
