  • So, the Hobbit-

Ok, so I haven't see this version yet (I've seen the cartoon, read the book, listened to the record version of the cartoon, etc so I'd say I'm fairly familer with the story). I was wondering if the 3d was worth it?

I didn't see it in 3D, just the regular way, but I LOVED it. I thought it was fantastic. Martin Freeman did a wonderful job as Bilbo, Ian McKellen is Gandalf, Sylvester McCoy brings to life Radagast, who was never actually seen in the the book (just a couple of mentions), I adore the music and I'm madly in love with Thorin (Richard Armitage).

    Yeah, I really enjoyed it.

I thoroughly enjoyed it (watched it last night). And hands off Thorin, I saw him first!

So Thorin is going to end up worse of than Sitting Bull?

          MINE!!

I loved the movie! They obviously tried hard to keep the lighter tone of the Hobbit but not make it jarring with the LotR movies. OVerall, loved it. Especially happy with the dwarves: they have distinct personalities now!

          And how awesome was Radagast!!?!

I saw it in 3d. I think my eyes got so use to the 3d it didn't stand out. ONe time it did when the Brown Wizard was in the forest and butterflies (I think, or birds) were flying around and you notice the 3d quality of it.

I guess I have to re-read the book since I don't remember 90% of it. The Brown Wizard had that big a part in the book?

Kind of ot, but there was a Star Trek preview before the movie that lasted maybe 19 min. The lady the other side of my friend asked him if that was the Hobbit.

It could also be the 48 FPS the 3D version was run in.

(For those unaware, the movie was filmed in 48 FPS and the 3D playback was also done at the 48 FPS. The 2D version was set to playback in the conventional 24 FPS.)

I'm actually a little worried about this one, I LOVED Lord of the Rings, and Peter Jackson's movies introduced me to what became my love of Tolkien and fantasy in general, but this one just looks. . . well my main thing is, I have no idea how they're going to drag it out into three movies, even with the added stuff from the RotK appendices and I'm guessing some Silmarillion plotlines, too.

My sister laughed her head off over the rabbits, she loved that. She kept whispering "That's not that far off from reality!" Meaning how fast the little buggers moved...

Depechemodefan, Radagast is not actually in The Hobbit at all. He is mentioned in The Lord of the Rings and there's some info about him (not much) in the appendices.

(puts geek hat on) There were five wizards sent to Middle Earth. Only Gandalf, Saruman and Radagast are named in the books. Gandalf talks about Radagast a couple of times in the LOTR but Radagast himself never appears. (geek hat off)

Peter Jackson took a lot of additional info from the appendices, which are extensive; there are also a number of books that compile further info about Middle Earth, edited by Tolkien's son Christopher and published some years ago. I think Jackson may have used those as references also. And some of this is artistic license, I think.

I too am a little concerned about doing three movies. I would have thought two would cover it. But we'll see. So far I have few complaints.

Oh and ladies, can't we share? (Thorin)

I also have to say that Martin Freeman is cuter as Bilbo than he is as John Watson. To me, anyway.

I too am worried how jackson is going to stretch this out to 3 movies. Maybe this is how it will play out:

the next movie will cover the the forest, the spiders, the wood elves and the river humans and end with Bilbo's conversation with Smaug.

The 3d movie will be the death of Smaug, the after math of that and the battle of the 5 armies and the final demise of the grey orc.

Still a little lengthy and a bit of a stretch. I think 2 parts would have been sufficient.

Largely it's supplemental tie ins to the LotR trilogy and REALLY expanding the fights. (a number of the fights in the book are a about a paragraph long but are expanded into 1 minute+ brawls)

Considering that I while I was watching the movie, I only felt time during the initial introductions of everyone and that pretty much stopped as soon as Bilbo signed the contract and ran after them.

After that moment I stopped feeling time and all of a sudden I was like, "..wait.. it's been three hours? It's over!? WHAT!"

Assuming he's going to be able to keep that up during the next two movies, I have no worries about it "dragging/stretching."

Finally, I saw it in 3D at an IMAX theater. Totally worth it. You don't notice the 3D during the more quiet scenes, but any time the action picks up or the camera is panning over a very large expanse of area (over Rivendell, for example) you can feel it in your spine. It's GREAT.

There was actually a decent amount of information from the LoTR appendices and some Silmarillion references too. And yes, the Istari (the Magi) are expounded upon a lot more in the books. I can relate some of their history most people don't know if you guys would like.
