  • My Uncle the idiot.

My Uncle is acting like a total idiot. Yea i know its not right to call your family members that but you'll find out the reason i call him that.

My uncle got laid off from his job and he has been unemployed for over a year. Now he has a "part time" job which wouldn't be so bad...BUT.... He goes from store to store with his brother, lets call him Uncle Idiot 2 in his pick up truck which has a full bed in the back to gather bales of cardboard from various stores in the back such as safeway, alberstsons, target, wal-mart, etc. On a good day they'll hit 4-5 stores and gather 2 bales of cardboard per store. each bale is roughly worth $25-$50 so in total they may end up with $125-$250 a day. He told me what he does is wait for the backdoors to recieving close for lunch or for the day then gathers the bales left outside. On the weekends he gathers EVEN MORE cardboard bales. He tells me that once he finds a more steadier job then he'd go 'part time' on his cardboard deal or even less. I told him that what he is doing is sort of illegal and he can be busted if they press charges. He tells me that once its outside its public property. So then i tell him that it is NOT public property and that it belongs to said store. that the money gotten for the bales of cardboard goes to THEM. He won't listen to reason. Other members of the family have offered to put him up for a while until he gets a job. Hell, his own sister's husband has even offered to HIRE him on the spot and he'd be given 20-30 hours a week and have a weekly paycheck given to him. Do you think he's interested? He says he is but still goes after his stupid bales of cardboard. I hate to do it but if the cops get called on him then i'm not going to bail him out of jail. He has to learn somethime.

Family or not, nothing wrong with calling them what they are.
Personally I'd be calling him much worse...like thief.

If you're not willing to call the police just yet, then call the stores and describe your uncle's truck.

If the stores operate the way mine does, they have a deal with a waste management company to pick up the bales and dispose of them, and then the store gets a cut of the money.

Where the bales are stored is most certainly NOT public property. In my store's case the cardboard bales are stored along our fence. There are also plastic bales out there. To get at them you have to venture pretty close to the vendor door. And if I heard a strange vehicle idling out there, I'd open the door and investigate.

And believe me, the waste management company will get a freaking earful from the dispatcher of the recycling company because they have dispatched an entire truck and driver to go out and pick up any number of bales *which costs the recycle company MONEY* and they have to come back empty. [or the stores corporate is pissed because the delivery semi is supposed to back haul the recyclables because corporate collects the districts recyclables and turns them in for the credit/money]

I hear ya. And I'd hate to have him go to jail but if that's what's going to teach him then so be it. A year or two in jail is not worth $125-$250 a day. Not when your offered 20+ hours a week job with a weekly paycheck.

Sooner or later those stores are going to notice they aren't getting any money back from the recycling companies. Does your uncle ever think to check for security cameras on those properties? One of them's going to get video evidence of him doing this and that will be that.

And I agree. Don't bail him out. As you said...he's got to learn sometime.

I think you underestimate your uncle. Clearly he's a criminal mastermind, and has thought over every angle in this amazingly lucrative criminal enterprise of his. Who are we peasants to judge this mental giant as he exercises his amazing talents for entrepreneurship and financial gain?

Nope: it's perfectly fine to call relatives what they are.

I, for instance, have deadbeat, useless, bogan relatives. (I also have some very, very impressive relatives. And most are kind of in-between.)

I"m used to stores giving boxes (unbaled) away if people ask. So this is news to me that they get recycled. So now I don't know if stores are giving away boxes anymore.

Though at my church (and I see them at other places) there are paper recycling bins. I recycle paper there and try to remove non-paper junk people dump there (like vhs, purses, tables, stuffed toys). I'm glad stores can make money off the recycled boxes.

I would guess that most stores that don't let people take their empty boxes have that policy not because of loss of recycling money, but because it got to be more aggravation than it was worth.

I know that at my store, if somebody asks us for empty boxes and we have some around, we'll cheerfully give them up. We won't save them for people who call ahead though.

Well, let's look at it from uncles point of view for a second. He's making between $125-250 per day to pick up (steal) cardboard from stores.

If we look at the low end of things, he's making 30K per year, tax free, because I have no doubt he's not reporting the income (heck, he still might be collecting unemployment!). At the high end, 60K. His only overhead is gas and vehicle maintenance. The work is probably a lot easier than a regular job, and he has no boss getting on his case.

From his point of view, it's a sweet deal: why would he give it up to take a legal job, pay taxes, and deal with management grief?

The real problem is, he either doesn't understand (or more likely doesn't care) that he is a) stealing from the companies whose cardboard he's taking, and b) leeching off society by not paying his fair share of taxes on his income like everyone else, and c) risking arrest and jail time.

Though, odds are he'd just get nailed with a misdemeanor charge, which would be minimal jail time if that. So he probably sees that risk as low. Cops have better things to do than go after cardboard theft.

                          He's not going to change.

I'm sure the IRS (or its equivalent, if not in the US) would *love* to have a little "chat" with him. They enjoy going after tax cheats. Maybe an "anonymous" phone call is in order

Reminds me of a person we had at work who was a scrap collector on the side... and had a habit of collecting scrap from the local Pep Boys and Midas and other national shops... without their permission, by going over there at night in a COMPANY TRUCK, hopping the fence and picking up as many old brake rotors and suspension arms as they could gather out of the scrap collection barrels.

Used the same logic, "They're throwing it away, public property, so it's free for me!"

And, except for the whole hoping-a-fence-is-trespassing angle, and the they're-not-throwing-it-out-they're-holding-it-for-a-recycler-who-buys-it-from-them angle, they were pretty much right.

                              Yeah, about those 2 points.......

When one of the places noticed a lot of their stuff disappearing, they added a camera

Luckily, they know we, as a company, would never endorse such a thing, so they were more than agreeable to boss' more than fair decision that the guilty party could "quit" working with us and find a new job elsewhere, in lieu of being fired facing criminal charges when they caught them on tape rusty-handed.

"Scrappy" was livid with us for the dismissal, claiming that "everyone" else at the shop was stealing from scrap piles all over town too, but declined to name names cuz' they weren't "a snitch".

Yeah, nobility is such your strong suit.
