Long time lurker, first time poster. Saw this last night and decided to share so my head wouldn't explode from holding in the stupidity.

I've just finished checking out at the grocery store and am gathering up my bags. There are two lines open, each with three or four people waiting. A man walks up to an empty lane with no cashier, no light, no indication that it's open and loads about thirty items onto the belt. He then looks at one of the girls checking and screams out "Hey, where's the checker for this line?"

"I'm sorry, sir, but nobody is checking in that line. She or I would be happy to assist you, though."

He looks from one line to the other, then back to his empty lane.

"But I'm already first in line over here!"

I walked out...my brain couldn't take any more.

"And you still are. If and when someone opens that lane, you'll be checked out right away."

I see quite a few people go on a lane without a cashier like this. Mostly it's because they misjudge which lane the cashier is actually on.

They do it at my store too. We have big, bold, bright red signs that say 'sorry, this till is closed' - does it make any difference? (Do we all know the answer to that one? )

This is a phenomenon that I never have understood. Lights off, nobody around it, but there is a SC standing there looking around as if "Where are they!' Or even worse, as somebody is walking away, having just finished their shift..waving them down and saying "Where are you going, I am ready to be checked out!"

I think SC's should be sentenced to work retail during the week of 'black friday' just one time. All it would take.

I think any random week would be more than enough.

Yeah, I think Black Friday weekend should be saved for repeat offenders (the ones who don't 'get it' the first time they're forced to work).

i've had that happen to me a number of times when i worked at the bookstore, usually when there are lines at all the open check-out lanes. and every single one of them had the same catbutt face on. sometimes i just had to laugh at the oblivdiots because they would demand someone to ring up their purchase and they're standing at a register with an open cash-drawer with no cash in it, no lights on and definitely nobody standing at it. hello? mcfly??

OK, I can see that. But why don't they see that it's definitely not the lane with no light on? I've said it before: cash register lights are a long-standing practice, for probably 50 years now; everyone should be aware that an open lane has a light on.

Yes, but we can't expect everyone to be able to notice the open register lights. I've had several people say they didn't notice the light was on or yell out "which registers are open??" or even say there's no registers open even though they are clearly identified by having their lights on. I've also had people ask "where is that register?" "which register is that?" after I tell them "I'm open at #"
