  • Christmas came early ...

So today I got up my nerve and went in to ask the Big Guy at the law firm what the chances were of my being kept on after Christmas.

Turns out he was going to speak to me about it after he returned from a week's absence next week.

    And the chances are "high."

Not only that, but I'll be getting a small raise.

AND this is pretty much indefinite, unless I (a) find another job, or (b) really screw something up.

The slight downside is that this is parttime and likely to remain so for the foreseeable future ... 3 days per week. But that's okay.

He said he is more than happy to continue working with The Mothership in terms of scheduling.

I'm not sure that The Mothership is willing to keep working along this schedule, since I was hired there on the basis that I could work day shifts. But we shall see. I am not in any fever of anxiety over it. For one thing, I'm becoming increasingly tired of going to the office (in the centre of the city) first thing in the morning, and then having to rush off back to the east end -- well past where I live -- to deal with the overwhelming chaos that is The Mothership. Among other things, I seem to be assigned strictly to 'Customer Support' (read: cleanup) virtually every shift. If I'm lucky, I might get some time on the till. Bar training seems to have vanished.

And secondly, I have applied for early Canada Pension, which I hope will start in March. That, together with this job, will provide me with enough to get along until I can find another supplemental job.

Anyway, this is the best early Christmas present I've had in a long time.

Congrats. I really hope it all works for you.

Maybe this job and your pension will mean that you can cut down the hours at Mothership and only work one or two days that aren't the same days as the law firm?

Thanks, Blue Ginger, I hope so too!

The thing is, I'm not sure The Mothership will agree to this. I was hired on there specifically because I could work day shifts. They weren't too happy about my asking for the concessions I did (don't schedule me before noon) but at that point they only thought it was for two months. Now that it's going to be permanent ...

Well, we shall see. If they refuse to accept it, I can't say I'll be heartbroken. I want to get out of there as quickly as I possibly can anyway. I'd be happy to substitute a basic supermarket cashier's job for this one.

Thanks, Morgana! I'll be talking to the boss at The Mothership in the new year to see where things stand.

            Congrats!

As for the Mothership...well...See if they'll work with you; keeping a vet around, even part time, is cheaper and easier than training somebody new. If not -- They can and will find someone else in short order if worse comes to worst. The law firm sounds like they appreciate you, and it's something that MAY eventually morph into a full-time job. Maybe not soon, but who knows?

Thanks, EricKei. Part of the issue will be that I will want to make a definite reduction in my hours at The Mothership, and that might not go over well.

              But we shall see.

Just be mentally prepared (and financially -- save what you can) is all you can do.

I'm extremely mentally prepared ... words cannot express the hatred I have for that job.

Financially, of course, it's another story. I can't really afford to quit without somewhere else to go (have applied for early Canada Pension and have discovered on the website that my application is "complete" ... but that doesn't tell me whether I'm getting it.)

I applied online in mid-November and apparently should have long since received a letter ...

But, you know ... the government ...

Early CPP will not completely replace the wages of The Mothership, but it will certainly go a long way to filling the gap while I look for another second job.

Although having said that, it's pre-Christmas right now and The Mothership is already being directed to cut labour because the numbers aren't where they're supposed to be...
