  • A WTF from my AGM

Ok so yesterday I thought I'd had $60 stolen from my drop envelope. Did what I was suppossed to do, and called both my AGM and police. The money was under the cash drawer (d'oh).

So I called AGM back and told him I'd found it. He goes into an irritated tirade (not yelling or even snapping, just frustrated) about how my accounting has been off. Then he says this:

"we've talked to you about this before, if it keeps happening we're going to have to write you up."

Record scratch. WHAT? This is literally the first time I've heard that I wasn't doing something properly. I think I'd remember getting my butt chewed about it. I remember coaching sessions from when I was a 17 year old lifeguard for crying out loud (btw I'm 36).

I asked him what I was doing wrong and how to do better, and he said "I'll talk to you on Sunday." So apparently I didn't listen to a coaching that never happened, had my backside nommed, and I get to come back tomorrow for a second helping.

Literally the only thing I can think of is that we're somewhat lax regarding who can do what on each computer. Someone may have done something odd (like the new employee who seems to be struggling with money procedures) under my name. Yeah, none of us were trained like that. We were told in no uncertain terms that employees are only to use their own logon.

So for now, that's what's happening. I am following cash handling procedures to the letter, none of this slipshod stuff the AGM himself lets us get away with to "save time." The person who relieves me is going to count the drawer and my drop before I head out. Period. If Night Audit wants to bitch that she has to "waste time" logging in, I'm sorry, but you aren't using my numbers. Talk to Corporate if you have a problem with it.

I emailed Big Bossman (who is away from the office on the unforgivable pretense of his wife just having popped out a child...SARCASM) and BCC'd myself on my personal email. I also sent AGM an email asking to bring in my punch record and the record of the bad transactions to see if I was even working then. Said AGM is a good person but I feel he's a bit lax in the integrity department (he's salaried but we still do need him to, you know, show up on time, also using the hotel shuttle to run personal errands is a bit questionable). I emailed Big Bossman on that too (also BCC'd myself) and while I didn't state it, I'm having a hard time not believing AGM may be targeting me for reporting his mild shenanigans.

That or his slipshod procedure following. Definitely do NOT let him try and throw you under the bus!

Trainees here are told to ring under older cashiers' numbers until they 'get it' (why? we have sets of training numbers just for this...methinks Shithead is just too lazy to learn how to do training mode or add new cashier numbers unless he absolutely has to). After too many errors under my name that I myself would never do*, I finally had to leave notes that my numbers were never to be used unless I was at the newbie's register as a bagger to watch them.

      * Most of these 'cycles' always took place shortly after getting a new SM, so I suspect that Shithead was trying to use me to cover for his incompetence.

UPDATE: So, butt chewing complete. Was actually painless, AGM gave me some pointers on how to do things better. Turns out the time "before" that they've spoken to me was back in August (a month after I got hired). I've only been off by a few pennies since then, but our accounting department is crazy strict and things have to be dead on, so I just need to make sure to double-count on the change.

Clarify? The money was under the drawer because you put it there, or because it got stuck and fell there? At my work when the till gets full sometimes a bill or two gets stuck and falls under the drawer, or in the spring at the back of the register. If that was the case, it's hardly your fault... No one gets in trouble for that, as it's not stealing, or negligence. It's the fault of the register.

Reminds me of when I worked selling and installing point of sales systems. One of the many occasional tasks I had was to audit a stores server and inventory when helping track down theft. I was called to a store to help figure out what was wrong. They were getting shortages on the register and could not trace it to cashiers. They'd even gone close to the level of dealers at casinos, employees were checked for cash, pocketless clothing, etc.

It took me a couple days, mainly waiting for the situation to happen. Turns out, the register drawer they were using on that particular register had been damaged, either by someone slamming their fist down on it, or by standing on it to change the lane light(my suspicion). Coupled with the weak springs on their drawer inserts and the fact that they were a high volume mostly cash store that didn't do cash drops often enough, the broken piece of the cash drawer would occasionally snag bills off the top of the insert when opened, then the back of the drawer would strip the bill off the projection and it would get crammed behind the drawer. I replaced the offending register drawer and then the manager and I took the drawer apart and recovered over 2 grand in cash. It didn't totally fix their accounting discrepancy, but it was more than 80% of that figure.

Thought of an addition to your post and my post right below it. Most of the manufacturers of cash drawers will give you a carrying capacity for their drawer inserts, IE how many bills will each chamber hold. NCR even gave us figures for new bills and heavily used bills. It's useful with back-of-house accounting settings, especially if you have the register set up to count bills for cash transactions. Cash drops can be set on a dollar amount and/or a bill count.

I don't really have a "register" per say. It's a locked cabinet drawer with a cash drawer (the thing with the dividers) just set in the cabinet drawer. Cash we take in gets placed beside the drawer so that the drawer always balances at exactly the contracted amount (some of my coworkers have raised an eyebrow at that but Corporate Manglement wants it done that way). It's therefore easy for cash to fall under the cash drawer, which just lifts out. Anyway everything seems to be ok. Big Bossman wants to talk to me about AGM's use of the shuttle for personal errands, but other than that, everything is pretty much back to normal.
