Just a quickie from today.

So, customer comes up to the bar, and orders one drink, amounting to the cost of £2.

Customer proceeded to write a cheque!

Me: Oh. I'm sorry, we don't accept cheques.
SC: What??
Me: It's our policy. Sorry.
SC: Unacceptable!
Me: Do you have no other way of paying?
SC: That's not the point! This is totally unacceptable!
Me: I'm really sorry, but we don't take them. We never have. I wouldn't even know what to do with a cheque.
SC: Unacceptable! Cheques are legal tender you know!
Me: Maybe, but we do not accept them.
SC: Unacceptable! Unacceptable!

He stormed out.

Granted checks are legal tender, but that doesn't mean that merchants HAVE to accept them. Hell, I don't blame any merchant for not accepting checks since they are a huge PITA, especially dealing with bad checks. That SC needs to know that he should always have alternative forms of payment on hand as a precautionary,but apparently that's too much for him to handle.

I had an old lady write a check for her grocery order, about $50, and I completed the transaction. She then decided she wanted a PACK OF GUM form the candy rack. She decided to write check for that. After she dung ou the CB, found a pen, she wouldn't use store pens, etc, etc.

I'm confused.

Does anyone know of a restaurant and/or bar that takes checks? They all seemed to have stopped around here about 4 years ago. By that, I mean the last hold-outs gave it up 4 years ago. Admittedly, some still have teh really old sign still up, which tells me some nimrods still try it , but really, folks, get out more!
