The last customer to do their Required Minimum Distribution from their IRA came in this afternoon. [The details aren't really important, except that RMDs have to be done by the last business day of the year.] He says, "this is the latest I've ever come in." Um, no. I reminded him that one year, he came in the afternoon of the very last day of the year. It actually didn't get processed before end of day, and there was difficulty getting the reporting done correctly when we sent it to the IRS. Which, of course, he blamed on us.

Luckily, he wasn't such a sucky customer this year. He was the last customer to do their RMD, but he didn't wait until the very last day.
"I look at the stars. It's a clear night and the Milky Way seems so near. That's where I'll be going soon. "We are all star stuff." I suddenly remember Delenn's line from Joe's script. Not a bad prospect. I am not afraid. In the meantime, let me close my eyes and sense the beauty around me. And take that breath under the dark sky full of stars. Breathe in. Breathe out. That's all."

I had to deal with several such clients today.

Food stamps have to be renewed every 6 months. We send letters that tell people to renew by the end of the month prior to their renewal month (i.e. you need to renew your 02/2018 food stamps by the end of 12/2017) to avoid late renewals. This really isn't to make things easier for us lazy goberment workers, its to stop people who think its a good idea to wait until 12/28/17 to renew their 01/2018 benefits from having their benefits interrupted.

1st client didn't bring paystubs. Employer wouldn't verify over the phone. Client gets upset because EVERYTHING is the same as the last renewal and we ALWAYS ask for this stuff. (not said: if you know that we ask you for the same thing every time, why don't you bring that thing every time?) She can't afford the gas to drive all the way to work and all the way back and her children are going to starve and its all my fault!!! (total miles? about 17)

2nd client managed to change jobs 3 times in 6 months and was currently working job #4. No paystubs, no letters of termination. I was able to verify 2 termed jobs over the phone, told the client they had to get verification of the 3rd one and bring in paystubs and a form from employer explaining normal range of hours. Totally UNACCEPTABLE! Its my job to do this, they aren't going to spend their time and money doing my job. Everyone here hates them, their lives are so hard and nobody understands.

3rd told me how she was always prepared and had everything I needed. Which she didn't. She then told me that her child had ripped up and chewed on what she knew that we would need and that she was on a week of paid leave because their company closed between Christmas and New Years so she couldn't get them until 1/2/18 and that I had to make an exception to the rules because it wasn't her fault! Also, I am a b***h who ruined their New Year by making her children starve. (I seem to starve a lot of children.)

It was that starving child that chewed up the paperwork she needed to bring because they were so hungry. At least they got lots of fiber in their diet.

Got an email 12/15 from a 52-year-old patient whom we haven't seen for over 2 years, asking for a referral to gastroenterologist for a screening colonoscopy. He wants to get it done before the end of the year. Replied we'd send the referral but it was unlikely he'd get it before 12/31, and that he is long overdue for a physical. He responded "I don't think I need a physical. Can't you call the specialist and get me worked in?".

Just sayin': I spent a lot of years driving a car where 17 miles represented a gallon of gas because cars that get better mileage cost more than I could pay, and where an extra gallon of gas would seriously screw up my budget.
And during those years I was turned down for foodstamps because I made too much.

The woman's lack of preparation is sad, and her trying to blame you for problems that are her fault is shameful. But the bit about not being able to afford an extra round trip to work is entirely believable.

Sounds like some of my tax clientele. Those who come in in April.
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

Do you mean the ones that show up in the third and fourth weeks of April?

(In the US, tax returns must be filed by April 15)

Oh, trust me, I have been there too. If this had been a first renewal, I would have had much more sympathy, but she has been in the system for over 3 years. She knows what we need, she has said so. Not to mention that she drove from her home, passing her job to get to the office.

Today, at 4pm, the last minute for anyone to get a case completed, I pulled a woman with 3 kids who needed to renew her food stamps and medical by the end of the day. She had waited 3 hours for her interview. She was cheerful and apologized for coming in so late, but she had everything we would need. And...she had EVERYTHING!

It was amazing. A wonderful way to end the year.

I imagine it was something of a relief to her, too.

Right. April 15 is on a Sunday and Monday, the 16th, is the Emancipation Day holi-
day in the District of Columbia. So everyone gets until the 17th to file their taxes.

(I didn't look at a calendar before posting my previous note.)

Back in the late 1980s there was a persistent rumor that McDonalds was supporting the Irish Republican Army. It turned out to be a misunderstanding about their retirement benefits.

Well, Mickey D. can't catch a break from the rumor mill, but they do sometimes lead with their chin. I remember not too long before your article, there was the urban legend that they put worms in their burgers. They put out a full-page ad in assorted major newspapers, pointing out that ground beef was $4.99/pound, while worms were $6.99/pound: "We'd have to be crazy to put worms in our burgers!"

Unfortunately, that just left people wondering what was cheap enough to put in a McDonald's burger.
