    *RING*

    -Friendly Neighborhood Towing, Argabarga speaking
-Yes, my car got towed from the 4th street parking garage, I'd like to get it back
-Uh, it doesn't look like we towed anything from there today, what kind of car was it?
    -A red Mustang
-Sorry, I don't see anything matching that description, or from that location, we do not have that vehicle
-But, your signs are up! They say you tow from here!
-Yes, we do, but we don't have that vehicle
-Well, great, now what do I do?
-I'd call Other Guys Towing, there's a chance that the police might have requested that vehicle be towed for some reason, and if that's the case, it could have been towed by any other company in town, since they work on a PD rotation list... so I'd call Other Guys Towing, and if you strike out there, call the non-emergency number for the PD because anyone who tows anything inside the Borough must notify PD that they have it
    -And what's that number
    -It's 555-2 *interrupted*
-Oh, never mind, found it, I just got of the elevator on the wrong level! Thanks! *click*

    Uh, your welcome....

    *RING*

    -Friendly Neighborhood Towing, Argabarga speaking
-Yes, I'm looking for my truck
    -Okay..... what kind was it?
-It's a white GMC Sierra with Colorado plates
-Sorry, we do not have anything matching that description, where would it have been towed from?
    -Oh, I don't know
-Uh, you don't know what street it would've been on?
-No, it was wrecked the other night on some freeway in Next Townsville
    -You don't know which one?
-Nope, just a freeway of some kind...
-Does the person who was driving remember where he was?
-I can't get in touch with him, they took him to the hospital after the wreck, and then they took him to jail, so I have no idea.
-Oh, well, Next Townsville is about 30 minutes down the road from us.... so that's probably why we don't have it, one of the towing companies down there probably does, you can try Crusty Old Guy Towing at 555-xxxx, or Scary Hillbilly Towing at 555-xxxy, and if you strike out there, I'd call the State Police Barracks in Next Townsville, they probably have a record of who's got it
    -Okay, thanks! *Click*

-Yes, this is Officer Smith of the Campus Police, we need one wrecker at the Red "K" parking lot by the computer science building.
-Sure, I can get you one in 15 minutes, what kind of car are we towing?
-Oh, you'll see it, it's the one that just caught fire
-Okay, I have a driver on the way
-Thank you, you guys have a nice day *Click*

Hopefully the fire dept. was called to put the fire out. Though you towing a car on fire might scare some losers in not parking in a restricted lot.

But no one was complaining about tow fees or about their car being "illegally" towed.

Read thru some of Arga's other threads...By comparison to some of those calls, yes, "car on fire" is firmly in the "normal" side of the spectrum

While I can sympathize with the first caller, as I have "lost" my vehicle before, not to mention having "lost" my bicycle as well. However, when your vehicle is not where you think it is, it's generally a good idea to look around before immediately calling the tow company!

                  Car on fire?
It's off topic, but I've gotta share my car fire stories with you.

It's kind of strange, really. I've only ever seen two cars that were completely on fire. Both during my travels around the U.S. in '98-'99. The first one I saw as I was driving north out of Chicago--I saw a car engulfed in flames on the southbound side of the highway. And after driving by it and continuing to go where I was going (I had no itinerary or schedule), I almost immediately regretted not pulling over and watching.

The second one was some time later in the trip as I was, bizarrely enough, driving south out of Chicago. Yep, same city, different directions, different times, two different car fires. Once again, I saw a vehicle on the opposite side of the highway engulfed in flames. Not being one to repeat past mistakes, I immediately got to the other side of the highway to watch the carnage. I got there just minutes before the minivan's side door simply melted off of the van's body. And no, I wasn't the only one watching this...there was quite a crowd standing around.

And yet, for whatever reason, in my all my travels, in all the cities, towns, and states I've been in and to, and all the roads I've traveled, both in that trip and others, those are the only two complete car fires I've ever seen. Very odd.

Was that on I-57? There have been a number of horrendous accidents along a stretch of I-57 after it turns south coming out of the Dan Ryan expressway.

My parents and I saw the immediate aftermath of one on Thanksgiving night back in the mid 1990s, maybe 1994. Traffic had come to a halt and we saw something further up the road on fire. People started pulling around on the left, so we were able to get around, but we were close enough that you could feel the heat from the burning minivan.

We heard later that they closed the road down for a time, after the emergency personnel got there. I can't remember what the details were, but someone going north crossed the grassy median and hit someone in the southbound lanes.

They put up guard rails a couple years later.

I have to say, I didn't find the middle one too sucky. Sounds like the poor guy loaned his truck to a friend and friend had to go get drunk and wreck it. Calling your tow company wasn't too bad, but he was cheerful about accepting where he should be calling!

I haven't the foggiest idea, as this was 13-14 years ago.

Ouch. But I should specify that both of my stories were not, as far as I could tell, a result of wrecks or accidents. Both vehicles were standing upright, one on the side of the road, one off an exit ramp. Both seemed to be the only vehicle affected. And both seemed undamaged by anything but the fire. I'm no expert, of course, but by everything I saw regarding both vehicles, and the people around the second vehicle, neither seemed to be accident-related or wreck-related.

They were just cars on fire.

Just a couple of weekends ago at work, someone's vehicle caught fire just before 6:00 pm, which is a half hour before shift rotation. Night shifters coming in had phoned 911 and were coming in spreading the word around, and needless to say, just about everyone was in a panic on what if it was parked by their vehicle! (sorry, me included )

So, we get out of work...and there's two fire trucks and a smoldering Lincoln towncar. Thankfully, they'd parked out in Bum Sex Egypt, and no one else's car was harmed.
