Be firm, and make him go. That's what my mum did, and still does, despite my phobia. That is a good thing cuz otherwise I'd have terrible teeth now.

I'm sorry to threadjack, but I need some advice in the dental area:

My son, who is 19, refuses to go to the dentist. His reason is that he never has any cavities (yay him!) so he doesn't see the need. However, his wisdom teeth have come in and, while they don't bother him, they are pushing his other teeth forward, so that now all his teeth are crooked. As he says, it's not life-threatening, but I would like to see him get it fixed.

Any suggestions on how to get this guy to the dentist, keeping in mind that he doesn't like "Mom" to tell him what to do? Thanks!
crooked teeth can end up causing future pain, or even worse, can create pockets under the gums where infections can set in. you can't floss THAT away!

plus it may chase potential mates away.

Plus I'm of the mindset that "doesn't like listening to Mom" doesn't apply if when they're still dependents. Not when it's over something that's clearly for their own good.

My son's dentists administers nitrous oxide before doing any dental work that involves needles. I think some dentists do it for adults too. Works like a charm, at least on 3-year-olds.

This! Nitrous is wonderful! I had always seen my dentist faithfully every 6 months....until a general dentist decided I needed a root canal. My teeth have not been right since and no amount of meditation eased my anxiety. At least not until I met my new dentist. Between his calming demeanor and his excellent staff, I was able to finally see a specialist to get the root canal re-done! The specialist gave me the nitrous and was done in no time. I remember telling the assistant (when she asked if I was ok just before the procedure), "I could care less about anything right now. He could walk in here and tell me he was pulling all my teeth and I couldn't care!" Within 2 minutes of turning off the gas, I was fully back to normal. Ask for it! If you are anxious, it can definitely help.

        Good luck!

I never had a problem going to the dentist. I have gone since I was four or five. I've had so much work done, that nothing fazes me anymore.

I haven't gone lately only because I am still paying down the last bill from them.

another vote for I.V sedation here...back some time ago I had to have major dental work done, we're talking all of my back teeth yanked (at least one of which was a wisdom tooth that had to be cut out) porcelain caps on the front teeth etc & my dentist did the sedation dentistry. Basically I'd show up when the place opened, be sedated & work done, when he was done one of the office people would call my dad & he would come pick me up, take me home & go back to work. I'd sleep until about noonish the next day & then would go back to work the following day.

Did that once a week, every week for several months..So yeah, definately look into it, it was a lifesaver for me

            Good luck!

Oh, I'll also add two things about wisdom teeth...first, I got fully sedated too, and it was AWESOME (literally blinked, and woke up after everything was done). Second, my orthodontist at the time recommended getting all four out at once, even if the others weren't causing problems, since the only thing worse than getting a surgery is getting it a second time. I was like a chipmunk for a while, but it wasn't that bad.

Update: Well, I finally got my appointment for the filling today, and apart from a moment where operations had to be stopped so I didn't lose consciousness (I was hyperventalating so much, it was possible I'd faint) it all went as planned. As always, it was worse thinking about it than actually experiencing it, and I'm done now for appointments til six months in the future.
