  • Australian Fire Check-in 2019/20

It's summer time in the land of Oz and fire season started very early this year.

We now have fires in every state.

I'm in Melbourne, so I am ok. But I have some friends on the edges of already burnt areas of NSW and not far from the Gippsland fires in Vic.

Can my fellow Aussies please check in? Just in case?

Emergency sites for all states: (Please don't stay on the sites long. While they have done massive upgrades to the various sites, we don't need them crashing.)

Sydney is covered in smoke. It has fires/burnt areas to the north and to the west. The south of Sydney seems to be ok at the moment, but there are massive fires along the coast approx 160km south from the centre of Sydney.

Mount Kosciuszko national park is being evacuated. Anyone still there after 10am on 3rd Jan will be on their own. The fire there is out of control. It's incredibly dense and hilly bush.

Jump onto NSW fire site below. Anything shaded in black is burnt. Active fires are a blue diamond with white flames. Yellow diamonds are 'Watch & Act' which means if you are leaving, go now. Red diamonds are 'Emergency Warning' which means the fire is too close to leave, get to water or shelter in place.

One news report has already said that we lost more area than the Amazon fires and this may have the biggest burnt area on record for Oz.

So far we have not had a lot of casualties, but have a number of burn patients in hospital. There are areas that can't be accessed, so they literally don't know how many homes/building have been lost. We are also in a country wide drought with the worst areas affected being NSW & QLD. It could be months before we know how much livestock and native animals have been killed.

The area that has been burnt totals 56,180 square kilometres. (This info is from 2nd January. The area has expanded and will keep growing until all fires are out.)

UK is 242,495 km², Scotland is 80,077 km², England is 130,395 km², Ireland is 84,421 km², Wales is 20,735 km²

This should give you an idea of the scale. If you can even imagine it.

To give you a break down for each state with info from 2/1/20:
South Australia: 2 lives lost, More than 15 bushfires burning, More than 60,000 hectares burned, 90 homes destroyed
Queensland: more than 5 bushfires burning, 250,000 hectares burned, 45 homes destroyed
Western Australia: more than 40 bushfires burning, 1.2 million hectares burned, one home destroyed
New South Wales:15 lives lost, more than 100 bushfires burning, 3.6 million hectares burned, 1087 homes destroyed
Victoria: One life lost, more than 40 bushfires burning, 500,000 hectares burned, 68 structures destroyed
Tasmania: more than 30 bushfires burning, 8,000 hectares burned, one home destroyed.

In the last few days, the death toll has risen. We also have a number of people missing in cut off small communities. It is hoped that they are still alive, but there is no way to find them at the moment. The smoke is so bad and the fires so fierce, that no searching is possible.

There have been several small towns completely wiped out. Again there is no way to check on these towns. The Air Force has been mobilised and they are hoping to have helicopters over these areas in the next few days, but they have to stay out of the way of water bombers.

The Navy has been ferrying people from an area of eastern Victoria that has become completely cut off. So far they have gotten a couple of thousand locals and tourists out over a few days. I think there will be one or two more 20-hour round trips for that particular navy boat in that area alone. It will then move to another area, either just around the tip to the bottom of NSW or towards a few towns under threat that are able to evacuate by road at the moment. There is another navy boat doing similar off the coast of NSW, with more on the way.

I can't even talk about the wildlife. It is fucking heart breaking. Entire national parks are just gone. Entire populations are gone. Some estimates are 1 billion deceased. The numbers are just too big.

they're winning at the moment - there's still a few that are being controlled and a handful that are out of control, but for the most part, the Sydney ones are controlled/contained.

Also, as a Sydneysider who has not been on the site recently, we're fine, although two of my friends ended up affected by the bushfires indirectly - one ended up being cut off temporarily for a couple of days with two children she was taking care of at the time (she works in daycares/nannies on occasion) and the other had family who were living in the bushfire affected area, but were otherwise well prepared and fine.

We ended up flying interstate for Christmas thinking we'll get away from the smoke, only to discover upon arrival interstate that a bushfire had popped up about an hour's drive away from my SO's family (cue frantic phone call to check their bushfire plan was in place) and then once we were at my family's place, some idiot lit a grass fire in the playground up the road from their place.
