  • laptop-related question

*I apologize if this isn't explained well, I'm not exactly a computer tech person*

To make it short - I'm taking an online college class in German, I have to use a headset and mike to record oral assignments, but the headset in question has one plugin for the headphones, and one for the mike, and my laptop only has one jack to plug things in. (so I've had to use the desktop in the living room for the oral German assignments)

So my question is - is it possible to get some kind of extension for my laptop so that I could use the headset in question?

I believe you need one of these: http://www.everbatim.net/store/index...-splitter.html

Not sure where you are or what other suppliers there are, just a random google result.
I am so SO glad I was not present for this. There would have been an unpleasant duct tape incident. - Joi

My one caution which might be stupid is to check if the laptop will recognize a microphone connection and isn't audio output only before you buy...

What type of laptop is it? A splitter might work, but that really depends on the port on the computer. Does the computer jack support both mic and audio functions? If so, this adapter should work. http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-h...K0T3KQQE4T9EQ9

However, if the port on the laptop is only audio out, you're going to need an external interface of some sort.

It's an Acer laptop (got it in November 2013), and I believe the computer jack only supports audio functions.......it didn't seem to register the mike when I plugged that part in.

Then I'd say something like this which runs off the USB might work: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Audio-Adapte...-/321645060431

If it's a 4 pole connector a regular mic wouldn't register. Any chance you have a set of smartphone earbuds around? The buds from an iphone have a 4 pole connector, for example. If the mic from the phone headset works, then the adapter I posted would work out for you. If it doesn't, then an external sound card or the USB dongle Gizmo posted would be your best bet.
