    Cripes, what a hassle.

I'm thinking maybe a little time in the drunk tank might have been more productive for everybody involved but her.

    ^-.-^
In most places, the jailer would not have taken her until she sobered up. A lot of jails are turfing the drunks to the ER because so many of them drown in their own puke in the drunk tank.

Going by the story, it sounds like she was a GOMER. (Get Out of My Emergency Room!)

I only know that little bit of slang because of a novel whose name escapes me.
The House of God. Great book. I live by the Laws of the House of God.

I love this. I've used most of these terms at one time or another.

    A couple more:

FOS: Full of Shit (some Abdominal films actually get labeled with this one).

SOB: Shortness of Breath, but we now have to write it SHOB to avoid the negative connotations.

"Boys" Male genitals, usually the testicles

    "Girls" Female breasts . . . usually.

ECU: Eternal Care Unit. "She's being transferred to the ECU," ie she just died.

Same thing happened to me. At least 1.5 hours wandering around the house with my ipad firmly implanted.

I have mixed feelings about this. The police write citations and then leave them with us. They take so long to sober up, the cops arent waiting around. Waste of bed space, but I dont have a better idea so...

Alaska has "sleep it off" houses. CPS goes around picking up the drunks that the cops have called them about. It works out for everyone as the police are freed up to do their jobs and the ERs aren't being clogged with drunks. The people who staff houses are at least EMTs, if not higher trained.

I know. It frustrated the hell out of me when I was still working in the ER>

This is an excellent idea. Are they used for druggies as well as drunks?
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

The "truth in advertising" people need to give that site some Viagra (to get rid of the "ED").

Some of the funding is in the city budgets (in Anchorage they fall under Department of Health and Human Services), some comes from the state, some from PFD's (Permanent Fund Dividend) that people donate and some from private donations. PFD's are also with held from people for various reasons and can be allocated where needed (inmates, scoff laws, things like that). The sleep off center is attached to the jail so if they get violent they are just shipped next door, but it is a separate entity.

Nope, no druggies allowed. They bring a whole different set of issues that do NOT need to be mixed in with regular drunks. See above about the violent folks.

For fuck's sake, why didn't someone have the popo lock her in the drunk tank for the night? It's obvious her husband is a lazy asshole and she's just wasting everyone's time. Might as well let her sleep it off in a cell.

It probably saves the city money in the long run. The drunks sleeping it off would otherwise consume police or medical resources (beds, paperwork, rooms, as well as time from staff that could be used elsewhere) while the EMT level staff at the sleep-it-off cost less than the medical professionals at the ER and can attend to more slumbering drunks than a typical doc/nurse can regular patients - I.E. their time is worth less and they use less of it, win-win. Not a bad idea if you can make it work.

I know after a few of my stupid ex's stunts he pulled, I have nothing but the utmost respect and admiration for ER nurses and docs and any assistants.

I can honestly say, if I ever had to deal with someone who was so drunk they hurt themselves, then were starting on with cussing and ripping on me, I'd be more inclined to smother them with a pillow than to help fix them up.
