I call this sc "yeah, right, lawyer" or "yrl". He is a homeless guy who claims he is a lawyer. He dresses nice, but he was a "face of homelessness" in some campaign the City started-his picture appeared in ads and all.

One time he had to use the bathroom and the bathroom was closed for cleaning. yrl sent a laundry bill to the library because he soiled his pants. The library paid for it.

Yrl says he is a lawyer but he doesn't know what a contract is, though. We have laptops we loan out for 2 hours for use in the library. You sign a contract that says "you will be fined $25 if you return the laptop late." The contract also says, "you can not take the laptop into the bathroom." I caught yrl going into the bathroom with the laptop:

me: sir, you can't take that into the bathroom.
yrl: I have to use the bathroom.
me: you can't take it into the bathroom.
yrl: *eye-roll* well, what am I suppose to do?
me: take it back to the laptop desk.

This is how his account looks like:
02/28/12 CALLED CUSTOMER TO DISCUSS FINE ON ACCOUNT. CUSTOMER FEELS THE $25 FEE SHOULD BE WAIVED, SINCE HE WAS SICK AND THROWING UP IN THE RESTROOM. I EXPLAINED THAT HE USES OUR SERVICES EVERYDAY AND IS WELL AWARE OF OUR POLICY FOR LAPTOPS. HE HAS HAD HIS LAPTOP FEE WAIVED SIX TIMES BEFORE. THE LAPTOP WAS INDEED RETURNED LATE AND HE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FEE. SAE/LST
2/22/12 CUSTOMER AWARE OF FINE ON ACCT. CUSTOMER ASKED IF FINE COULD BE WAIVED, BUT I REITERATED THE POLICY. CUSTOMER UNDERSTANDS HE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR FINE. DP/LST
05/11/11 LST/US PATRON REPORTED LOST CARD
04/20/09 WAIVED FINE OF $150 FOR LAPTOP ITEM NOT CHED IN PROPERLY. DP/LST
12/03/08CUSTOMER RETURNED LAPTOP NO LATER THAN 5:10 P.M. APPARENTLY, IT WAS CHECKED IN AFTER IT WAS RETURNED AND WAS CHARGED A FINE. JAM/COL
LOST CARD RMS COLLIER 08-11-06 OLD CARD NO. xxxxxxxxxxxxx
05/08/06 WAIVED FINE LAPTOP WAS NOT CHECK IN HCOL KB

Wow, someone stuck to their guns, alright. He said he was sick, but I'm leaning toward "bullshit." Really, you can't turn in a laptop and then get a fine since there is a 15 min. grace period. I used to work the laptop desk back during renovations and one dude turned in his laptop late, passed the grace period. The next day I checked his account and a cw dismissed his fine because he said "it wasn't checked in when he turned it in." So a lot of people just give in when they get bullied, and yrl bullies people.

another story about him. We used to have an emergency phone. One day I was at the desk with that phone and he used it. His conversation was, "I'm leaving the library now. I'm going to get a beer. See you tomorrow." I had 1/2 the mind to tell him that wasn't an emergency, but we know he would stick around to complain about me.

To be fair, just because he was the face of a campaign about homelessness doesn't mean he was one. At least in Australia, not a single 'homeless', 'abused', etc person who appears in government ads or commercials for major charities like the Red Cross are actually the state they claim to be. They are usually either actors or people the advertisement-makers thought would prompt the right kind of emotions in the viewer.

Next time this dipwad abuses the system, don't have half a mind to all him on his bullshit, go all in, and call him on his bullshit. He sticks around to complain about you? Let him. If you're right, and he's in the wrong--which he will be--just what will the complaint accomplish, other than making him look like the assmunch he is, and giving you the chance to gloat? Oh, wait, I know what else it will accomplish--it might just make him think twice about trying to get away with his bullshit, at least when you are around. As you said, he bullies people, and gets his way. It's time for someone to stand up to this bully and show him that just his being an annoying prick won't always get things to go his way.

unfortunately my managers would say, "dmfan, why did you antagonize him? It's no big deal he didn't use it for the emergency," or something like that. Managers fold like a deck of cards. Best ex. of this is the woman who claimed she was pregnant (for 2 years) and that she has back problems and she needs to use the librarians's nice comfty chairs. And of course management let her have her own librarian's nice comfty chair.

Also, the guy is homeless. His address on his library card is a homeless shelter. Unless all these years he has been claiming to be homeless but really is scamming people with that.

          That's pretty good Zoom.

Your managers suck. But if all they are going to do is politely question you on why you did it, it sounds like it would be worth it. Because it sounds like they are as spineless with their employees as they are with the library's patrons.

The straw that broke the camels back, or why I am quitting, is the Chief scolding me because I didn't provide excellent customer service. Actually, what really got me to quit was she did not calm down after talking to a customer, so she was scolding me and was mad. I didn't need that, so I gave my resignation 3 weeks latter (after I came back from a week vacation). If she calmly told me I did wrong, I probably would still stick around putting up with customer abuse.

Well, if you're quitting, maybe you should just start enforcing all of the rules like a tight-ass to the people who deserve that treatment.

What are they going to do? Fire you?

Of course, that might burn bridges you'd rather leave intact, so may not be the wisest course.

                  I'd totally do it, though.

I still enforce rules. If the customer complains, and I get talked to, it won't matter.

But I can imagine in the coming weeks the customers asking my cws "what happened to that Hispanic girl who kept on waking me up?" Customers are a nosey lot.

I'll still went to meetings this past week. Kind of was thinking "what are they going to do to me if I didn't go?" but I did learn important things for the next 4 days I'm working.

It's important for you to be the professional here, and not burn your bridges. Odds are you are leaving eligible for rehire, which will be important to finding your next job.

Also, it's important to your self respect to hold the higher ground.

So you're doing the right thing: making a change to maintain your sanity (no job is worth an ulcer), and walking out with your dignity intact.
