Well, I don't work retail but I am a waitress in a restaurant and we hate late people too! We close at 8:00 and almost every night we have people walking in at a minute or two before closing and have the audacity to ask "are we too late?" Heck yes you're too late!!
I just don't get that. I won't even go into a sit-down restaurant unless I have at least an hour until closing. For fast food, if it's not a 24-hour place, I try to give them at least 20 minutes.

I put the bill on my credit card, and left a cash tip. $15 sandwich with side and drink, $100 cash tip.

If I am going to inconvenience people with my stupid eating habits, it should be worth there while.

Trust me, I feel your pain! We close our cafe down at 2:00, and I can't stand morons who come waltzing in at 1:59 and order something that takes a long time to make like omelets or burgers and they wind up having coffee and dessert!

We had this foreign couple the other night that didn't seem to get that the store closes at 7 pm on Sundays. I know at least 2 closing announcements were made and about half the lights in the store turn off around 5 minutes after we close. And yet these people couldn't figure out we were closing and they had to leave. Now i understand if they don't really understand english and didn't, therefore, understand the closing announcement. But you'd think that half the lights being off and them being the only customers in sight would be a bit of a giveaway that we're closing. But oh no, of course not.

So finally 10 minutes after 7 we start shutting down our registers. THEN these people come up (with a whole bunch of stuff i might add) and want to check out. Well my 2 co-workers were each closing a register while i was off doing some last minute cleaning up. One co-worker looks at the other and goes "how far are you into closing it?" She just goes "nope, sorry, we're closed." Then the couple finally gave up and left. Had they tried to stay any longer security would have hauled their asses out of there.

I hate it when people come strolling in at say 5 minutes to closing time, especially on Christmas Eve, pushing an empty shopping trolley. Not least cuz such people always bitch about the supermarket having empty shelves.

My main annoyance tho is the cretins who disregard my closing sign and try to jump on, usually whining, "But there's queues on the other tills!" Boo hoo, my heart is breaking. I never under any circumstances let anyone on my till after my sign goes up, cuz if you let one person on, you'll get another half dozen trying to come on with the parrot cry; "But you let her/him come on!" And as soon as my shift's over, I want to go home if that's not too much to ask.

When I flew I would often have passengers asking for stuff as were were about to land. Even though the seatbelts signs were on, the bars were sealed so we couldn't serve them anything and we were meant to be strapping into our jump seats.

Yeah, sure, I'll risk my safety to grab you a coffee!

As a customers I would never dream of going into a store at closing, why should the employees have to stay (unpaid) whilst I shop, they've had a long enough day as it is!

                Confession

*blushes* I've been one of those SCs before... I'm only glad the people were so nice about it. I was trying to get a visa to go work in Taiwan, and had to mail my paperwork into the consolate or whatever. At the time, I worked really bad hours, so I only managed to get into the post office about 20 minutes before it closed. No problem, right? I hand them the package, turn to go, and realize... I FORGOT TO INCLUDE A MONEY ORDER FOR THE PROCESSING FEES!!! I rushed back to the counter to explain what had happened. The woman there kindly directed me to the nearest place to get a money order. I got back, of course, about 2 minutes after they had closed. Window has a metal barrioer over it, door to the back is closed and locked. Crap. Crossing my fingers, I rattled the barrier and knocked on the door, hoping they weren't actually gone. They were there, they found my package for me, opened it up so I could put the money order in and re-sealed it. Very very nice post office people!! I love them to pieces!
Of course, just as I was turning to leave, a woman rushes in. "You're still open?? I can't believe it! I work the same hours as you guys and I thought I'd NEVER be able to get my package!!!" They sighed, chuckled, and gave her the package.

I was one of those at one of the fast-food places, but it was purely by accident. And once I realized, I corrected it.

We were headed to a New Year's party, and we stopped somewhere to get a bite to eat first. While we were waiting for our order, I noticed people cleaning, and asked if they were closing early. They said yes, they were closing at 8:00.

I looked at my watch, and it was 7:55. CRAP! I didn't like when people used to do that to me, and I wasn't going to do that to them. I apologized, and told them we'd take it to go instead. I've gotten used to eating while driving. In fact, I used to do it when I still drove a stick. Now that takes some talent.

We got our food and were out of their hair by 7:59. But wouldn't you know it, just as we were leaving, three more cars pull into the lot. That had to suck.

A guy who taught me and the Boss much about fruit and veg retail was convinced that if you opened twenty-three hours a day, you'd get complaints about the remainder.
But having the store open twenty-three hours a day would probably be less confusing
for the poor customers then having it open twenty-four hours a day. Haven't we had
a thread about someone being totally confused about some business being
open round the clock and asking about the closing time?

Anyone who's ever worked in a clinic knows the term "the bus". As in "The bus just arrived". More people check in during the last 15 minutes than have been coming in for the past 2 hours. They fall into 3 categories:

                      1. Trivial problem that could easily wait. My fave: The guy with a wart on his foot at 5 minutes to 8:00 PM on New Year's Eve (closing at 8, natch) Second fave: The guy with athlete's foot at 3:59 PM on New Year's Day (closing at 4).

                      2. Drug seekers hoping that they will get what they want by exploiting the staff's desire to get home (similar to the banking customers).

                      3. Worst of all: Potentially serious problem that needs lots of labs, X-rays, phone calls to specialists, ambulance transport etc etc. How long have they felt bad? 2 weeks/months/years.
Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the restraints...

We don't close, but we get annoying customers when we swap breakfast/lunch menus. It's not so bad when lunch starts, cos people just order a lunch meal with, say, orange juice to drink, if it's their breakfast. But when breakfast starts, people try to bargain with you over the 'leftover' burgers. They want them at half price, cos they're "old." Well, as soon as they're old (ie. sat for 10 mins), they get tossed. Fries go at 5 mins, cos the warmer's usually being cleaned so they get cold. So really, you can either pay normal price for the food you really want, or settle for the breakfast menu also at normal price.

One idiot tried to convince me that a manager said he could have half price cheeseburgers, cos we only had a few left. Well, no way would any manager say that, cos we don't discount stuff. Ever. In conclusion, while he argued, the burgers reached the 10 minute mark and were thrown out. So he stormed off in a huff.

I only get asked when we close if I'm wearing my "24 hour" hat, with the pretty logo on it with the sun & moon & "24 hours." It's great. I just point to my hat and smile, "we're open 24 hours!" I think customers think that I/we stay there 24/7, cos I've had a few comments like, "24/7, when do you sleep?" And one rude comment from a teen girl about me having no social life cos I worked overnight shifts. Where does she think I get my drinking/taxi/clothing money?
Michael: Maybe you'll be inspired by the boat party tonight and start a career as a pirate.
Tobias: I haven't packed for that.

                          I was bad, once

My husband and I were on vacation, and it was our 3 year anniversary of dating. We're newlyweds, so we still celebrate our dating anniversary.

Anyways, the plan was to watch an anime marathon (we had the DVDs) all night and drink vodka and baileys.

Well, the vodka mix we had planned went sour. It really tasted nasty! And we had decided to try Baileys Mint Chocolate, and weren't fond of it, either. So, we looked at the clock, and the liquor store was already closed, and the grocery store had 5 minutes. We decided to try.

Off like a racecar, driving like morons (I'd only had a sip of the nasty tasting stuff, so I was ok), screeched to a halt in front of the grocery store doors, my husband jumped out of the car even before I completely stopped and darted into the grocery store. He's fast, btw, he was on the track team, and usually won. Still fast.

Literally, a mere 4 minutes later (held them up 3 minutes) he comes out panting with 4 bags of alcohol and sodas (for mixing)

It was a fun night! Felt bad about inconveniencing the people there, but it Was our anniversary, and my husband Did move at record speeds.

Hahahahahaha!! It's fun to read the other experiences here.
I thought it was cute some people "fessed up" and said they were sucky that way once....like we ALL feel guilty doing SC stuff to workers.
I am sure the staff weren't that pissed because they could see that you weren't doing it to "get something out of it for yourself" or did it purposefully.

I was always happier after I helped someone who knew they were last minute and were genuinely pleased or grateful for the service. What I just can't stomach any longer are the ones that purposefully come up with stuff with no pricetags at closing and try to persuade you that it was this low-ball price so you won't check and rush to get 'em out or jerks that have a sketchy transaction and no ID and think you're gonna skip checking everything out properly.
Oh yeah, like I have $9500.00 in my cash box at closing time.....NOT!!!

I hate weasels! It seems that every single day, no matter how busy or slow....especially the slow days.....the staff has got everything all ready to go, all put away.....all that has to be done is count the cash and lock it all up.....some CREEP always flounces in at 1 minute to close....then 1 person has to stay open and wait on them and everything STILL gets delayed by 20 minutes. it NEVER fails to happen!!!!
                            GRRRRRRRR!!!!!

I feel so bad for the restaurant people.........having the last minute jerks take an HOUR or more to finish is unbearable.
Great......you're supposed to leave at 9PM, but OOPS -SORRY....gonna be 10:30 now....UGHHH!!!! All I would need to know is that it is 45 minutes or less until closing - I'll come back tomorrow or get fast food. If the waitstaff has to hint that they are closing soon.....you really shouldn't be expecting to order some fancy meal and then sit down and savor the dining experience! DUH....that's just rude.

Plenty of people are considerate, but the ones that just demand above and beyond what's normal are so selfish. Ahhhhhhhhh...it's great to vent our frustrations somewhere. I just pray for some sweet people to be genuinely kind to me (and us all) tomorrow!

The video store I worked at was in a mall, so we had a gate we pulled down with this long hook. Five mintues before closing we pulled the gate halfway down to discourage people from coming in, but we'd still get a few yutzes that didn't take the hint, and we weren't allowed to kick them out. The ones that actually bought, I didn't mind; it was the ones that would come in five minutes to closing, browse for half an hour, mess up our already straightened-for-closing shelves in the process, and then leave with bupkis that pissed me off. Thanks for keeping me here till frickin' midnight, asshole!
The AM at the music store that was part of the same chain as we were used to pull his gate halfway down, and then stand in front of it and twirl the gatehook so no one could get past him! He always caught hell for it from the DM, but the rest of us loved him for it.

I actually had a CONSIDERATE customer last night; she comes to the register just after we locked the doors, and asked what our return policy was, as she knew we were closed, and as such, she would take her clothes home and try them on, ratehr than keep us there (we'd be there anyway, straightening up). She then pays, and leaves...i love when people realize that we associates actually have a life too! She was pleasant, and not at all a pain...

Although since its sale time, and i had to go to the bank with the manager, still didn't get home until 11:15
