  • How hard can it possibly be??!?!

Dr's offices are our customers too...

I have a pateint come in with a doctor's order on a photo copied script (perscription paper). The order is fine, clear and legible except the Dr's signature so light that you cannot see it except for the first letter. This won't work, espcially since this doctor is in another city and not on staff with our hospital. I called the Dr's office and talk to his nurse who tells me that "I better let her have the test". I explain to her that we can't until she gives me an order with a signature that can be seen. She says that I have to fax her the origional and she'lll "look at it".

I faxed the order to her along with a face sheet with instructions on what I need and where to fax it to. 30 min later the order had not been refaxed and I called back. I talk to the nurse again and she tells me there is nothing she can do because the DR is out of the office today. I explain to her that without that signature the patient can't have the test. I get more attitude that I care to hear and she says she'll "do somthing".

The patient comes up to the windo angry about the wait, I explain to her that we're waiting on her dr's office to send me an order that we can accept. I understand, she has to use the bathroom and her test requires her to have a full bladder. I hate being chewed out because of stuff that other people do.

I call the office back after 15 min and the nurse is still nasty. She says that she couldn't do anything so she'll just use his signature stamp... !! How hard could it have been for her to do that in the first place. She says that she tried to fax it but it hasn't come through. She snaps at me and says that the person who called her first needs to learn how to give out the number correctly. This sent me off the deep end becaue I gave her the correct number with insturctions on the face sheet. I tell her that I gave her the number and that it was the correct number. She gets huffy and gives me that "whatever" attitude. I have to repeat the fax number 8 times because it is too complicated for her to understand the first 7 times eventhought I'm talking as slow and as clear as I can.

So I end up registering the patient who treats me like sh*t because of her wait. I am sick and tired of being chewed out becaue somone else's stupidity.

I have something like that from last month. My "usual" doctor was arrested last year for child abuse. Since I found out that he was practicing with a suspended license, I was already going to switch anyway. So I looked in the phone book and called the first doctor that looked good to do my yearly physical.

The receptionist was such a rude bimbo that I almost looked elsewhere. Monday was MLK and I was working the second half of the week, so I asked for an appointment for either Tuesday or Wednesday. The receptionist only responded with, "We're closed on Tuesday." There was a 10-second pause and I said very sweetly, "Can I schedule an appointment for Wednesday?" Then she acted as if she was doing me a favor by scheduling my appointment.

Then when I came in for my appointment (early, mind you), she totally ignored me and had me standing at the window for about five minutes while she chatted with her friend. I filled out my paperwork pretty quickly, and the bimbo was nowhere to be found when I turned it in. One of the nurses, who seemed rather peeved that the girl had vacated her station, had to process it for me.

The doctor and the nurses were excellent, but the little priss-pot almost lost them a client because of her attitude.

I've got my own sucky nurse story, and it was bad enough to turn my own mother into an SC.

See, my mother was recently diagnosed with spinal arthritis. Only diagnosed recently, but she's been in pretty much constant pain for over a year from it. A couple of months ago it was enough to send her to the emergency room. Once it was established what the problem was, arrangements were made for her to start taking shots for the pain. Las month, an appointment was set up with a specialist for the end of this month.

Mom's checked back a couple of times to see if there might have been any cancellations that could make room for her earlier because there are times when she can barely walk. The last time, after listening to a lovely recorded message that said the doctors and nurses were there to help you and assault would not be tolerated -- I'm not making that up -- she got to talk to a nurse. After hearing my mother's question, the nurse snapped, "You're not the only person in pain, you know!"

Mom snapped back, "Oh, I know but if they've been waiting as long as you people have made me wait, I figured they'd be dead by now!"

And then she hung up. Perhaps it was sucky, but the woman is in pain. This is the same woman who gave birth to me via natural childbirth, against her will, and who says this pain is worse at times. So, I can see her point. I'd have snapped too.

I would hope so. If a signature stamp is good enough for me to write a $75M check it should be good enough to authorize a medical procedure.
The only words you said that I understood were "His", "Phone" and "Ya'll". The other 2 paragraphs worth was about as intelligible as a drunken Teletubby barkin' come on's at a Hooter's waitress.

My wife had to get a physical and stuff done for nursing school. The Dr's office kept dicking around with the paperwork. First it was It'll be done at noon. Then oh, he's not here to sign it.

Then, (to me) I told her she had to get more blood drawn. But here's the paper work for her to do it. (So why didn't you give it to her when she was here, and why'd you tell her it was ready to be picked up?)

Then, the lab forgot to do a test, that's why we need more blood.

I think in most cases the Doctors are great. It's the people who work for them (recieptionists, etc) who are the problems.

Then there's the doc who told a friend of mine to drink two 2-liters of Pepsi to get rid of strep throat, so maybe not.

Yup, it works. Lots of doctors do that, I've even seen it on informed concent for surgeries as well.

Our gen practictioner's office is the same way. It makes me sad, because I rather quite like the doctor (I think he's a bit of a hypochondriac, so he takes every compaint seriously) but the staff is awful, it's nearly impossible to get an appointment, and I hate dealing with the nurses when I'm there to see the doctor.

On the other hand, my OB/GYN is probably one of my favorite people on the planet. He and his whole staff are pretty much amazing, and they have yet to ever tick me off or screw something up. Maybe that's what it is--I'm spoiled!

Nurses and the reception people are rude wherever I go. My doctors used to be located in a big shared office building. The answering service on the phone was the rudest I have ever encountered. When I asked a question it was always a snooty several word response followed by a hangup.....such as "the doctor is at lunch! Click!" One time I had this exchange with the lady:

Me: "I'm trying to set up an appointment."
Crabby lady: "Well you need to call during business hours!!"
                    Me: "And what are bu-"
                    Crabby lady: :CLICK!:

                    I called back.....

                    ring

                    CL: "Answering service"
Me: "Um, I'm calling back because you hung up on me before I was finished..."
CL: "CALL BACK DURING BUSINESS HOURS 9-5!!! I CANNOT HELP YOU!!! :click:"

Many doctor's office staff look at you with vacant, even rolling eyes when you talk to them. I used to work around some rude staff and nurses who made fun of patients, sometimes to their face. And when they were off doing their own things, they cussed like sailors and bitched and complained all the time. And some of them smoked like chimneys on their breaks(way to set a good health example). I can honestly say that they believed that patients were lesser human beings and they treated them like cattle. Many of the doctors I met were somewhat decent compared to their staff, at least in public. And my wife swears that the staff at one clinic she worked at helped themselves to some drugs in their drug closets because every time she found them in the closet, they jumped and nearly hit the ceiling.

You all are making me really appreciate my doc's office. I've never had a real problem...I've had to wait because they were busy, and I was once on hold for a half hour trying to make an appointment, but I've never had anyone outright rude. And they even have a guy who managed to get my blood in one try...I have really light skin and my veins are deceptively visible...usually they think it'll be so easy and then it takes 2 or 3 tries...once they resorted to the butterfly needle they usually use on kids! I was 23. I wonder if the sheer quantity of earrings and other piercings this guy had made him somehow better at the whole sticking people with needles thing...

The staff at our GP's office is the greatest. It is the staff at my Husband's Neurosurgeon's office that gets to me. My Husband has a rare neurological birth defect. Right now we are dealing with a tumor wrapped around the C-2 nerve. Last time we saw the Neurosurgeon he refered my Husband to the cancer and radiation clinic to try and see if they could kill the tumor with radiation therepy instead of doing surgery that close to the spine. He sent us in to his scheduling nurse to have her get him on schedule to begin radiation treatments. She just gave me the phone number and said for me to give them a call. When I did they would not set up an appointment because they needed it to be done by the scheduling nurse.

It took 7 weeks to get him scheduled for his first appointment to have them go over his case and we start the treatments this Thursday.

I have never had a problem with any medical staff that I have gone to or had take care of my family. The nurses and the MOAs are always nice and patient. The doctors have always been good as well.

I do believe that nursing has got to be one of the most difficult and demanding positions out there. I have absolute respect for anyone who is a nurse. On the flip side, there are only certain personality types that should be in nursing. By the sounds of these posts, it looks like a fair number of people who are in nursing shouldn't be.

I beg to differ. 3 of the 5 doctors that I work for are routinely one hour behind schedule and are totally unapologetic about it. They also play favorites (with their staff *and* their patients) and interfere with me when I'm trying to collect balances due. It's as if they hate making money, honestly! They just plain make me nuts-I've complained about them in other posts and will probably complain in a few more over the weekend, so for now I'll just leave it at that.

Oh I know there are some crap doctors out there. My last one was for sure. And his staff was too. I go in for a physical and get yelled at for not fasting. Despite the fact that I wasn't told to, and my insurance made me go to a lab anyway.

And the Pepsi story is true. My friend gets strep once a year and his (female) doctor gives him some meds and he's good to go. Well the female doc was out of town so he had to see the male doc. Who told him that people are too reliant on medication and to drink 4 liters of Pepsi. So he left and made an appointment with the Nurse Practitioner in the office, who agreed that Doc was a moron and that she and lady doc are starting their own office.
