  • Detroit?

I am going to Detroit in October to attend Skate America.

I know that it is a rough town--I grew up in Chicago in the 70's, so I kinda expect it to be a lot like it.

I will have some free time between events--does anyone have any suggestions of where to go---and not to go.

I am travelling alone and will have a car.

    Any suggestions would be awesome.

The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village is a awesome stop. You'll also be semi close to Ann Arbor as well as Frakenmuth if you don't mind a bit of a drive. Really try to get to Bronners it's a world wide stop of the biggest Christmas store with it being open 364 days a year and every one of them is Christmas.

If you do want to take a trip to Frankenmuth I would even offer buying you a chicken dinner at the Bavarian Inn.

Definitely Henry Ford/Greenfield Village. I used to work there. It was pretty awesome. Recommend eating at the Eagle Tavern (where I used to work). 1850's style restaurant.

If you like casinos, Greektown and Motor City. There's more than just the casino in Greektown, too.

I highly recommend Slow's BBQ for food. It's fantastic. Very popular restaurant, so expect a wait. It's on Michigan Ave.

Cliff Bell's, if you're into jazz music. One of the oldest jazz clubs.

The DIA (Detroit Institute of Arts).

The Automotive Hall of Fame. It's right by Greenfield Village.

      The Fox Theatre.

Orchestra Hall. I highly recommend a Detroit Symphony Orchestra show, if there are any going on while you're there and you can afford it.

      Belle Isle.

      Campus Martius Park.

      And lots more.

Ann Arbor is also pretty fun. The U of M graduate library is awesome. I love downtown Ann Arbor. Sadako has pretty good sushi, Pizza House is awesome, and Good Time Charley's is pretty great. GTC has 64oz Long Islands for $10, and there's also a dance club above called Cantina. And there is, of course, Bubble Island. Love bubble tea.

Greektown is a blast, and if you're a Hockey fan, there's always the Red Wings games - which opens 10/2.

            Thanks everyone for the ideas.

I will definitely be going to the Ford Museum. I grew up near an old airport hanger that he designed and have always had an interest in him.

Since I will be going in October, I am hoping for a crisp walk among some trees changing color. It's one of the things I miss about back east.

            Aethian, where is Frankenmuth--sounds interesting.

Psi, thanks for the recommendation on a restaurant--I'll check it out.

Probably won't attend any hockey games, as that I will be spending a lot of time at Joe Lewis arena watching Skate America.

I also want to check out that pawn store on tv. I know it's on 8 Mile. I plan on going during the day and dressing down.

Does anyone know what parts of town for me to stay away from? I haven't made my hotel res yet because I am afraid of booking in a bad area. I am 5'2" and am small in stature, so security is important.

            Thanks again for you thoughts.

West if Detroit. It's a bit if a drive but it has a nice beauty to it. Offer is still open for dinner on me. Also the shops next to the inn are old fashioned and great places for Christmas gifts.

America Jewelry and Loan is on the corner of 94 and 8-mile. I've been there and got to meet Rick. They are nice there.

What can't hear some of the people come out yelling how Les is cheating them?

Haha, I'm sure I could if I paid close attention. Apparently a lot of the people who come in where I work also go in there. One of my coworkers was watching the show and kept seeing people that she recognized.
