  • In which a coworker is threatened with death...

    Hello,

Well I've been reading the boards for a while now, ever since I started working retail after the military; and figured it was time to share my personal best.

A little bit of background, I work at an electronics shop, and for returns we require name, address, phone number and all that fun stuff. Most customers have no issue once you explain that it's company policy...

Well, I was MOD for the day, and so the fun of course begins, a customer walks in for a return, and CW seems to be handling it fine and then suddenly I am waved over...

    Me: well, me
    CW: my coworker
SC: obviously the master of the inappropriate 'joke'

Me to CW: So, what's up?
CW to me: well this guy refuses to give his information for his return. ( it was like a $5 return)

Me to SC: Sir, well company policy requires we get this information from you for audit purposes, blah blah...
SC: You're just doing it to get me on your mailing list and fill my mailbox with your bullc**p flyers.
Me: Sir, everyone gets those. I work here and even I get them, if we had some evil scheme you'd think at least employees would be able to figure a way out of it. If you want your money back we'll need to get your information though.
SC: Can you promise me that I wont get put on your mailing list?
Me: Well, I can't say 100% of course, but this information goes in a different database for our accountants, so I doubt it would put you on any kind of list.
SC: Well, as long as you promise, I'll give you my information. *rattles off his info*
Me: Okay, well I'll just need the card you used to pay with to just credit it back on.
SC: *hands over card* Well, if I get any of your fliers, I'll come back and kill you.
Me: *shocked look on face, quickly turning to anger* Sir, we're done here. You can either take your stuff and leave right now, or I'll go get you a chair to sit in, until the police show up. They're just across the hallway.
SC: I was only kidding, don't be so touchy.
Me: In this day and age, you never know what kind of crazies are running about. You need to leave, NOW.
SC: Just calm down, I was onl....
Me: Be glad I didn't call the cops right away, get out of my store NOW, you have threatened both myself and coworker with death; even as a joke, it's still illegal. Leave NOW. *as I move my hand on to my knife, expecting another fight (I've been swung on by no less than 3 angry customers over returns)*
SC: So I wont even get the refund?
    Me: No.

*SC leaves screaming about how we need to be able to take a joke.*

I mean, really, if you're that paranoid, just make up the addy and such, I have no way whatsoever of checking. I just need the name you give and your card to match....

Threatening somebody like that is no joke, no matter how the SC said it. Way to stick it to him!

"Can't you take a joke" is the first, best refuge of the sociopath. The level of whine is in director proportion to teh level of sociopathness.

I had a coworker that had a chair/stool thrown at him by a customer because he refused to return an open DVD (store policy). Yet, she still was allowed to shop there.

            Olive juice you too.

After he left, we did call the cops and he's no longer allowed in the store. I hope he comes in again so he can be escorted out by the boys in blue. Apparently they went to his house to let him know of that :P

I was robbed at knife point a year ago and people like that send me right over the edge.

I refused to serve one customer because he had his knife open and actually held it out to me because he needed help closing it.

I noticed that too... but it looks like he's picking his nose with the guard. Doesn't seem too dangerous to me.

I like that one... personally if that happened to me with the guy saying "oh but it was just a joke" my response would be "ok, in that case, I was just joking about ever giving you a refund, out"
